Lead Simulation Engineer

Bellevue, Washington, United States Amazon Full time
About the Role:

The Worldwide Design Engineering (WWDE) organization is dedicated to delivering cutting-edge, efficient engineering solutions that enhance our customers' experiences.
WWDE refines designs across the entire Amazon value chain, offering comprehensive fulfillment solutions from order initiation to final delivery.

We are in search of a Lead Simulation Engineer to contribute to the design and optimization of fulfillment network concepts and process enhancement solutions utilizing discrete event simulations for our World Wide Design Engineering Team.

Successful candidates will be visionary technical experts and proactive self-starters who possess the drive to leverage simulation and optimization tools to address intricate flow and buffer challenges during the development of next-generation fulfillment solutions.

The Simulation Engineer is expected to delve into complex issues and persistently pursue innovative solutions while collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Comfort in interfacing and influencing various functional teams and individuals at all organizational levels is essential for success.

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead the design, implementation, and delivery of simulation data science solutions to conduct system of systems discrete event simulations for significantly complex operational processes that have a long-term impact on a product, business, or function using tools such as FlexSim, Demo 3D, AnyLogic, or other Discrete Event Simulation (DES) software packages.

• Spearhead strategic modeling and simulation research projects to inform process design decisions.

• Exemplify best practices in the simulation science discipline to simplify problems and expedite the development of discrete event simulations with elevated standards.

• Identify and address intrinsically challenging process flow simulation issues (e.g., highly complex, ambiguous, undefined, with minimal existing structure, or with significant business risk or potential for substantial impact).

• Produce artifacts that set the standard for excellence within the organization, from process flow control algorithm design to validation, implementation, and technical documentation utilizing simulations.

• Serve as a pragmatic problem solver by applying judgment and simulation expertise to balance cross-organization trade-offs between competing interests, effectively influencing, negotiating, and communicating with internal and external business partners, contractors, and vendors across multiple simulation projects.

• Provide simulation data and insights that shape the business strategy of the organization. Document your approach, simulation outcomes, recommendations, and arguments through effective white papers and artifacts.

• Actively participate in reviews of simulation research science solutions, bringing clarity to complexity, probing assumptions, illuminating pitfalls, and fostering shared understanding within the simulation data science discipline.

• Play a significant role in the career development of others by mentoring and educating the broader simulation data science community on trends, technologies, and best practices.

• Utilize advanced statistical/simulation tools and develop code (Python or another object-oriented language) for data analysis, simulation, and modeling algorithm development.

• Coordinate simulation efforts between internal teams and external vendors to devise optimal solutions for the network, encompassing equipment specifications, material flow control logic, process design, and site layout.

• Deliver results in accordance with project schedules and quality standards.

A Day in the Life:
The daily activities encompass challenging problem-solving scenarios within a collaborative and enjoyable environment, working alongside talented and friendly team members. The internal stakeholders include IDEAS team members, WWDE design vertical, and Global robotics team members, addressing critical capital decision-making related to material handling equipment and technology design solutions.

About the Team:
The World Wide Design Engineering Simulation Team's mission is to apply advanced simulation tools and techniques to drive process flow design, optimization, and enhancement for the Amazon Fulfillment Network. The team develops flow and buffer system simulations, physics simulations, package dynamics simulations, and emulation models for various Amazon network facilities, such as Fulfillment Centers (FC), Inbound Cross-Dock (IXD) locations, Sort Centers, Airhubs, Delivery Stations, and Air hubs/Gateways. These intricate simulation models serve as invaluable tools, effectively identifying process flow bottlenecks and optimizing throughput.

Basic Qualifications:
• PhD or Master's degree with 5+ years of quantitative field research experience.
• Proven experience in communicating qualitative research methods and findings to non-qualitative researchers.
• 5+ years of experience investigating the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to business problems and products.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in converting research studies into tangible real-world changes.
• Familiarity with discrete and continuous optimization methodologies and algorithms.
• PhD.
