Job Overview

The Lead Facilities Maintenance Engineer is responsible for managing the upkeep, repair, and enhancement of HVAC, lighting, and various mechanical systems across multiple facilities.

This role involves directing the Facilities Maintenance team to tackle current and future challenges through the implementation of preventative maintenance, emergency preparedness, and sustainability initiatives.


Key Responsibilities:

Management of HVAC, Lighting, and Mechanical Systems:
  • Supervises the maintenance, repair, and optimization of HVAC, lighting, and other mechanical systems.
  • Conducts routine inspections, troubleshoots issues, coordinates bulb replacements, monitors energy usage, and schedules preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Maintains an inventory of maintenance tools and supplies, formulates detailed maintenance plans, and keeps precise records of maintenance activities.
  • Collaborates with the Facilities Operations Director to create and manage the Facilities Maintenance budget.

Equipment Maintenance and Compliance:
  • Oversees the maintenance, repair, and calibration of various operational equipment by developing maintenance schedules, conducting inspections, and ensuring adherence to safety standards and environmental regulations.
  • Stays updated on sustainability certifications and assists the Facilities Maintenance team in maintaining compliance.
  • Monitors regulatory changes and implements necessary adjustments to meet compliance standards.

Emergency Preparedness and Safety Management:
  • Develops and executes emergency response plans and safety protocols for maintenance-related projects to mitigate potential hazards.
  • Conducts regular safety audits, addresses safety issues, and provides guidance during emergency situations.

Sustainability Initiatives:

Leads the creation and execution of sustainability programs to promote environmental stewardship and minimize the organization's ecological impact:

  • Conducts assessments to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Creates action plans to incorporate sustainable practices into daily operations.
  • Engages with stakeholders to promote sustainability initiatives through workshops and outreach activities.
  • Collaborates with procurement teams to implement sustainable purchasing practices.

Staff Supervision:

Supervises Facilities Maintenance personnel, including Engineers and Technicians:

  • Assigns tasks and manages work schedules.
  • Provides training and monitors performance with a focus on safety and emergency protocols.
  • Conducts regular check-ins and team meetings to foster a positive work environment.

Working Conditions:

This is a full-time, exempt position requiring on-site work. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary, including potential extended hours, weekends, and holidays.


Physical Requirements:

Involves a mix of sitting, standing, and lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Regular movement for maintenance tasks is required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of facilities maintenance operations, including HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with diverse teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Commitment to safety compliance and emergency response planning.

Education and Experience:

Minimum of 8 years of experience in a commercial or industrial setting, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role. Proven experience in mechanical systems and budget management is essential.
