Job Overview

The Facilities Maintenance Specialist is responsible for executing fundamental daily tasks, including basic plumbing repairs, replacing light fixtures, and performing minor drywall and painting projects throughout the institution. This role involves supporting the Maintenance Engineers and more experienced Maintenance Technicians with intricate and demanding assignments, prioritizing safety and professional growth through mentorship. Additionally, the technician will assist with preliminary troubleshooting to support the Custodial team and the broader facilities requirements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Facilities Maintenance:
    • Collaborates with the Facilities Maintenance team on preventive upkeep and repairs of facility systems and equipment, encompassing electrical, plumbing, doors, HVAC systems, and large machinery;
    • Assists senior technicians with the maintenance and repair of air handlers, fans, pumps, heat pumps, refrigeration units, boilers, and chillers;
    • Conducts facility inspections and reports issues to supervisors for resolution;
    • Maintains a tidy and organized work environment, including the maintenance shop, mechanical rooms, and storage areas;
    • Supports seasonal maintenance tasks such as cleaning gutters and preparing buildings for winter;
    • Adheres to the institution's Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) standards and integrates them into daily tasks, including lockout/tag-out procedures and safety protocols.
  • Tenant Improvements & Event Support:
    • Executes tenant improvement projects, including drywall repairs, painting, carpet replacement, and hanging displays;
    • Reviews event orders and assists with the setup and breakdown of events and office relocations as necessary;
    • Provides logistical support to the Events department during special occasions by supplying temporary power sources and extension cords.
  • Regularly monitors communications for event orders and general maintenance requests from staff;
  • Assists the Custodial team with basic troubleshooting related to their equipment.

Working Conditions

  • This is a non-exempt, hourly position;
  • This role is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week;
    • Onsite work is mandatory;
    • Occasional weekend, holiday, and evening shifts may be required;
    • Travel to various locations may be necessary.
  • Physical Requirements: 5% sitting, 75% standing, 20% lifting/carrying/pushing up to 50 lbs;
    • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods;
    • Ability to bend and stoop frequently throughout the day.
  • Vision Requirements:
    • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
    • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
    • Peripheral vision (ability to observe surroundings while focused on a specific point)
    • Depth perception (ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)

    • Moderate (e.g., office environment)

Additional Responsibilities

Additional duties may include:

  • Driving to procure repair supplies;
  • Participating in emergency response procedures;
  • Assisting contractors during project execution;
  • Supporting educational programs during setup and transitions;
  • Monitoring the safe operation of equipment.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Experience in maintaining a safe working environment in relevant industries such as warehouse, carpentry, or production;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals in a professional setting.

Preferences:

  • Experience in HVAC systems;
  • Knowledge of drywall repair and painting;
  • Familiarity with maintenance software;
  • Experience working with volunteers.

Licenses and Certifications

Requirements:

  • Completion of pre-employment checks, including background and reference checks.

Preferences:

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record;
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
