Job Overview

The Facilities Maintenance Specialist is responsible for executing essential daily tasks, including basic plumbing repairs, replacing light fixtures, and conducting minor drywall and painting projects throughout the institution. This role involves assisting senior maintenance personnel with more intricate and demanding assignments, prioritizing safety and professional growth through mentorship. Additionally, the technician will provide introductory troubleshooting support to the custodial team and the broader facilities operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Facilities Maintenance:
    • Collaborates with the Facilities Maintenance team on preventative upkeep and repairs of facility systems and equipment, including electrical, plumbing, doors, HVAC systems, and heavy machinery;
    • Supports Maintenance Engineers and advanced technicians with the maintenance and repair of air handlers, fans, pumps, heat pumps, refrigeration units, boilers, and chillers;
    • Conducts facility inspections and reports issues to supervisors for resolution;
    • Maintains a tidy and organized work environment, including the maintenance shop, mechanical rooms, and storage areas;
    • Assists with seasonal maintenance tasks such as cleaning gutters and preparing buildings for winter;
    • Adheres to the organization's Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) standards and integrates them into daily tasks, including lockout/tag-out procedures and safety protocols.
  • Tenant Improvements & Event Support:
    • Handles tenant improvement projects such as drywall repairs, painting, carpet replacements, and installation of artwork and bulletin boards;
    • Reviews event orders and assists with the setup and breakdown of events and office relocations as required;
    • Provides technical support to the Events department during special occasions by supplying temporary power solutions and necessary equipment.
  • Regularly monitors communications for event orders and general maintenance requests from staff;
  • Assists the custodial team with basic troubleshooting related to their equipment.

Working Conditions

  • This is a non-exempt, hourly position;
  • This role is full-time, scheduled for 40 hours per week;
    • Requires on-site work;
    • May involve occasional weekend, holiday, or evening shifts;
    • May require travel to various operational sites.
  • Physical Requirements: 5% sitting, 75% standing, 20% lifting/carrying/pushing up to 50 lbs;
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods;
    • Ability to bend and stoop frequently.
  • Vision Requirements:
    • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less);
    • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more);
    • Peripheral vision (ability to observe areas while focusing on a specific point);
    • Depth perception (ability to judge distance and spatial relationships);

  • Participating in emergency response procedures;
  • Assisting contractors during project execution;
  • Supporting educational program transitions and setups;
  • Monitoring the safe operation of elevators and mobility devices.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams in a professional setting.

  • Experience in HVAC, drywall repair, or familiarity with maintenance software;
  • Experience working with volunteers.
