Job Overview

Objective of the Role:

The primary goal is to enhance the vibrancy of the floral industry by assisting the breeding, cultivation, and product innovation teams in executing their responsibilities effectively. This role is crucial for ensuring safety, productivity, and continuous improvement in tasks related to plant breeding and commercial trials. The Supervisor will foster a harmonious, secure, and professional atmosphere for the team while achieving outstanding results aligned with the company's objectives in breeding and product innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all necessary activities for plant breeding and commercial variety trials, ensuring timely and quality completion of tasks such as labeling, sowing, transplanting, cuttings, pollinations, seed harvesting, and seed cleaning.
  • Plan, assign, and manage the workforce required for breeding and trial activities, ensuring efficiency and quality in execution.
  • Lead a team of full-time and seasonal employees, ensuring optimal working conditions, maintaining inventory of supplies, and executing tasks successfully throughout the breeding and trial cycles.
  • Coordinate labor demands and availability based on requests from Plant Breeders, Trials Coordinators, and Greenhouse Managers to maintain proper crop schedules.
  • Engage with stakeholders on all aspects of breeding, cultivation, and trialing, communicating and implementing operational enhancements for successful outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and reliability in task execution.
  • Keep an updated inventory of supplies necessary for breeding and trial activities to facilitate smooth workflows.
  • Manage employee attendance to ensure adequate staffing for planned tasks, promote work-life balance, and support employees during personal emergencies.
  • Implement sanitation protocols to prevent plant diseases and pest outbreaks.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping to ensure a clean and organized work environment.
  • Educate and supervise the team to ensure compliance with company policies and initiatives.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and recommend salary adjustments based on performance.
  • Utilize corrective action strategies to address performance issues effectively.
  • Recruit, orient, and train employees and contract labor in their respective roles.
  • Ensure adherence to Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) best practices for the team.
  • Support the preparation and execution of marketing events.
  • Report any equipment or facility issues to the appropriate departments.
  • Manage and report on Human Resources-related matters.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Biology, Environmental Studies, Agronomy, or a related field with a solid understanding of plant biology and floral morphology is preferred.
  • A combination of a High School diploma or GED and 2-5+ years of experience in plant breeding or production operations.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience in the agriculture sector, particularly in indoor or outdoor plant breeding or production operations.
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken, is required.
  • Certifications such as Cal OSHA 10 hours are preferred.
  • Competence in using various software and online platforms.
  • Basic knowledge of database management and data analysis.
  • Essential soft skills include teamwork, problem-solving, people management, time management, and effective communication.
  • Ability to handle conflicts constructively and recognize the value of diverse perspectives.
  • Ability to provide direction, delegate tasks, and remove obstacles to facilitate workflow.
  • Comfortable interacting with diverse groups of individuals.
  • Efficiently manage and allocate resources.
  • Willingness to work weekends and overtime as necessary.

Compensation: $22-30/hour

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift/carry up to 20 pounds for 20% of the day.
  • Ability to push/pull up to 35 pounds for 20% of the day.
  • Ability to sit/stand for 100% of the day.
  • Ability to kneel/bend for up to 25% of the day.
  • Ability to reach for up to 25% of the day.
  • Ability to use hands/fingers for 100% of the day.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in greenhouse conditions for up to 75% of the day.
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces for up to 25% of the day.
