This role is pivotal in ensuring workplace safety, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement in plant breeding and commercial trial activities. The Plant Breeding Operations Supervisor is tasked with fostering a harmonious, secure, and professional atmosphere for the team while achieving outstanding results that align with the company's objectives in breeding and product innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all tasks associated with plant breeding and commercial variety trials, ensuring timely and quality completion of activities such as labeling, sowing, transplanting, cutting, pollination, seed harvesting, and cleaning.
- Organize and allocate workforce resources to meet the demands of plant breeding and commercial trials, ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards.
- Lead a diverse team of full-time and seasonal staff, ensuring optimal working conditions, accurate inventory management, and successful execution of breeding and trial cycles.
- Coordinate labor needs based on requests from Plant Breeders, Trials Coordinators, and Greenhouse Managers to maintain effective crop scheduling.
- Engage with stakeholders on all matters related to breeding, cultivation, and trials, facilitating communication and proposing operational enhancements.
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and reliability in task execution.
- Keep an updated inventory of necessary supplies to support the workflow of breeding and trial activities.
- Manage employee attendance to ensure adequate staffing, promote work-life balance, and support personal emergencies.
- Implement sanitation protocols to prevent plant diseases and pest outbreaks.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment through effective housekeeping practices.
- Educate and supervise team members to ensure compliance with company policies and initiatives.
- Conduct performance evaluations and recommend merit-based salary adjustments.
- Utilize corrective action strategies to address performance issues among staff.
- Recruit, orient, and train new employees and contract labor in their respective roles.
- Ensure adherence to best practices in Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) for the team.
- Support the preparation and execution of marketing events.
- Report equipment or facility issues to the Maintenance Department or Facility Manager.
- Address Human Resources-related concerns as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Biology, Environmental Studies, Agronomy, or a related field preferred.
- A combination of a High School diploma or GED and 2-5+ years of experience in plant breeding or production operations.
- At least 2 years of supervisory experience in the agriculture sector, specifically in plant breeding or production.
- Fluency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken, is required.
- Preferred certification: Cal OSHA 10 hours.
- Proficient in computer applications and various software platforms.
- Basic knowledge of data entry and analysis.
- Strong interpersonal skills: teamwork, problem-solving, management, and communication.
- Ability to handle conflicts effectively and maintain a positive work environment.
- Appreciation for diverse perspectives and cultures within the organization.
- Skilled in resource allocation and task delegation.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and overtime as required.
Compensation: $22-30/hour
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds for 20% of the workday.
- Ability to push or pull up to 35 pounds for 20% of the workday.
- Ability to sit or stand for 100% of the workday.
- Ability to kneel or bend for up to 25% of the workday.
- Ability to reach for up to 25% of the workday.
- Ability to use hands and fingers for 100% of the workday.
- Ability to work outdoors and in greenhouse conditions for up to 75% of the workday.
- Ability to walk on uneven surfaces for up to 25% of the workday.
