OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE:

Contributes to the mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy of FMCNA. Complies with the FMCNA Compliance Program, including adherence to all regulatory and policy requirements.

Operates as a vital member of the hemodialysis healthcare team, delivering safe and effective dialysis treatment for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, in alignment with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, as well as compliance with state and federal regulations. Responsible for the setup and functioning of hemodialysis machines while assisting in maintaining a safe and hygienic work environment. Engages in the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction and participating in process improvement activities that support the achievement of FMC Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Uphold the FMS culture through adherence to values and customer service standards.
  • Ensure exceptional customer service for all internal and external clients.
  • Foster and maintain effective relationships through timely and clear communication.
  • Proactively address and resolve customer service issues promptly.

PATIENT CARE:

  • Assist healthcare team members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), and Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM).
  • Greet assigned patients and inquire about their well-being since their last treatment, reporting any concerns to the nurse supervisor.
  • Assess vascular access for patency and communicate any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
  • Collect necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight, reporting any anomalies to the nurse supervisor.
  • Execute vascular access evaluation prior to treatment and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report any difficulties or unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
  • Administer Heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment per prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
  • Monitor patients' responses to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
  • Document vital signs prior to reinfusion and perform all necessary functions for treatment discontinuation.
  • Conduct evaluations prior to termination of venous access, including standing and sitting blood pressure assessments.
  • Ensure hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Assess the patient prior to discharge and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
  • Responsible for accurate documentation of patient treatment information, including completion of the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and progress notes as applicable.
  • Report significant changes in patient condition directly to the nurse supervisor.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy, reporting any changes or unusual findings.
  • Perform and document interventions for unusual patient status and their responses.
  • Collect all prescribed laboratory tests and prepare specimens for collection.

MAINTENANCE AND TECHNICAL:

  • Ensure environmental integrity and cleanliness, maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surfaces, chairs, and surrounding areas between treatments according to facility policy.
  • Conduct all necessary tasks for preparation for dialysis treatment and document appropriately.
  • Perform required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System (SDS).
  • Ensure immediate cleaning of blood spills with appropriate disinfectants as per facility policy.
  • Organize and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to minimize waste.

CLERICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE:

  • Document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Accurately enter all treatment data into the designated clinical application in a timely manner.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure nursing signatures are documented.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile necessary paperwork.
  • Prepare lab requisitions for prescribed or urgent lab specimens.
  • Collect, label, and prepare lab samples according to laboratory specifications.
  • Ensure timely collection of lab specimens by the appropriate courier.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position requires frequent interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians, as well as travel between assigned facilities. The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels. Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.

EDUCATION:

  • Must possess a Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification or a High School diploma/G.E.D., meeting certification requirements within the designated timeline.
  • All relevant state licensure, education, and training must be completed as required.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Previous experience in patient care within a hospital or related facility is preferred.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification.
