OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE:
Contributes to the mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy of Fresenius Medical Care. Complies with the FMCNA Compliance Program and adheres to all regulatory and policy requirements.
Acts as an integral member of the hemodialysis healthcare team, delivering safe and effective dialysis treatments for patients under the direct oversight of a licensed nurse, in alignment with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, while adhering to applicable regulations. Responsible for the preparation and operation of hemodialysis machines, ensuring a safe and hygienic working environment. Engages in the FMCNA commitment to the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient satisfaction and actively participates in activities that support the achievement of FMC Quality Enhancement Goals (QEP).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
- Uphold the FMS culture through values and customer service standards.
- Ensure exceptional service delivery to all customers.
- Foster and maintain effective relationships through timely communication.
- Proactively address and resolve customer service concerns promptly.
PATIENT CARE:
- Assist healthcare team members in providing tailored patient education on adequacy measures as needed.
- Greet assigned patients and check on their well-being since their last treatment, reporting any concerns to the nurse supervisor.
- Assess vascular access for functionality and communicate any irregularities to the nurse supervisor.
- Record necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight, reporting any anomalies to the nurse supervisor.
- Conduct vascular access evaluations prior to treatment and inform the nurse supervisor of any unusual findings.
- Execute vascular access cannulation and report any complications or unusual observations to the nurse supervisor.
- Administer Heparin as permitted by state law or as delegated.
- Initiate dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
- Monitor and address intradialytic issues as directed by physician orders.
- Observe patients' responses to dialysis therapy and report any significant changes to the nurse supervisor.
- Collect vital signs prior to treatment conclusion and document all relevant actions.
- Terminate dialysis treatments following established protocols.
- Assess patients prior to the removal of venous access, including blood pressure measurements.
- Ensure hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
- Evaluate patients before discharge and report any unusual findings to the nurse supervisor.
- Document pre- and post-dialysis weights and vital signs accurately.
- Responsible for programming dialysis machines according to individual patient needs.
- Ensure that safety alarms are activated and functioning properly.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient treatment on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- Communicate significant patient information or changes in condition directly to the nurse supervisor.
- Monitor patients and perform machine safety checks in accordance with facility policy.
- Document any interventions for unusual patient statuses and their responses.
- Conduct laboratory testing as prescribed and prepare specimens for collection.
MAINTENANCE AND TECHNICAL:
- Uphold environmental safety and cleanliness standards.
- Clean and disinfect dialysis machines and surrounding areas between treatments as per facility policy.
- Perform all necessary tasks for treatment preparation and document appropriately.
- Conduct required pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm tests.
- Initiate the Solution Delivery System.
- Ensure immediate cleanup of blood spills with appropriate disinfectants.
- Organize and utilize supplies efficiently to minimize waste.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and document involvement.
- Accurately enter treatment data into designated clinical applications in a timely manner.
- Review treatment documentation for completeness and ensure necessary signatures are obtained.
- Prepare initial patient charts for admissions and compile necessary paperwork.
- Prepare lab requisitions for prescribed laboratory specimens.
- Collect, label, and store lab samples according to specifications.
- Ensure timely collection of lab specimens by designated couriers.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, with controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels. Exposure to infectious materials may occur.
This position involves direct patient care, which may require heavy lifting and assistance with patient mobility. Equipment aids and coworkers may provide support. Frequent standing and bending are required, along with the ability to lift and lower items weighing up to 30 lbs. and occasionally up to 40 lbs.
EDUCATION:
- Certification from a CMS-approved program or a high school diploma/G.E.D. with the requirement to meet certification standards within the designated timeframe.
- Compliance with all relevant state licensure and training requirements.
EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Previous experience in patient care within a healthcare setting is preferred.
- Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification.
