PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Health & Safety Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the Health & Safety Manager with daily departmental operations, including equipment assessments, employee training, and the formulation and implementation of policies aimed at minimizing workplace injuries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with various internal teams to oversee medical, workers' compensation, DOT, and Process Safety Management tasks, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed and liaising with medical, legal, and insurance entities to investigate and resolve incidents.
  • Conduct thorough investigations to determine the root causes of significant near misses, injuries, and safety incidents, implementing corrective measures and ensuring timely completion of all required documentation; communicate any unusual findings to relevant personnel.
  • Perform job hazard assessments and safety analyses, providing recommendations for improvements.
  • Work alongside the Complex Health & Safety Manager to update and enhance safety programs, ensuring compliance and fostering a safe, incident-free workplace.
  • Oversee health, safety, environmental, and DOT audits within the Complex, ensuring that issues are promptly addressed, paperwork is completed, and any unresolved or recurring issues are communicated to the appropriate leadership.
  • Design, update, and deliver safety-focused training sessions and conduct safety meetings to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement, including analyzing current and recurring incidents to develop targeted training.
  • Examine accident data, new processes, and machinery for potential safety risks, providing recommendations for resolution.
  • Facilitate New Hire orientation to ensure that onboarding employees are well-versed in safety protocols, resources, and contacts within the Complex safety team.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and suggest enhancements as necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining the monthly supervisor safety training matrix by gathering required data for relevant reports.
  • Understand existing safety emergency plans and develop strategies for newly identified potential emergencies, maintaining readiness to execute plans if necessary.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. It is an individual contributor role requiring competencies such as Functional/Technical Skills, Action Orientation, Problem Solving, Learning Agility, and Interpersonal Savvy.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Engineering, Biology, or a related field.
  • A combination of an Associate's degree and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a four-year degree.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Completion of HAZWOPER training at the technician level.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in a similar setting.
  • Proficient in applying OSHA, DOT, and Workers' Compensation regulations.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with all organizational levels; multilingual capabilities are highly desirable.
  • Ability to manage and resolve most issues efficiently while maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, plan effectively, and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
  • Possess a strong customer-centric approach, high energy, and a sense of urgency.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Adhere to departmental and company safety policies and programs.
  • Utilize required personal protective equipment in all mandated areas.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended shifts as required by business needs.
  • Capability to work consistently in varying environmental conditions, including cold, humid, hot, or dusty settings with moderate noise levels.
  • Ability to navigate around the facility and under equipment as necessary to perform job duties.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling may be required.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 lbs.
  • Capacity to stand for up to eight hours.
