PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Health & Safety Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the Health & Safety Manager with daily operations of the department, which includes conducting equipment assessments, facilitating training sessions, and developing policies aimed at minimizing employee injuries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with various internal teams to oversee medical, workers' compensation, DOT, and Process Safety Management activities, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed and effectively communicated with medical, legal, and insurance entities to investigate and resolve incidents.
  • Conduct thorough investigations to determine the root causes of significant near misses, injuries, and safety incidents, implement corrective safety measures, and ensure timely completion of all required documentation; report any unusual findings to relevant personnel.
  • Perform job hazard assessments and safety analyses, providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Work alongside the Complex Health & Safety Manager to update and enhance safety programs, ensuring a compliant, secure, and incident-free workplace.
  • Oversee audits related to health & safety, environmental standards, and DOT regulations to ensure that all issues are addressed, documentation is completed, and any unresolved or recurring issues are communicated to the appropriate leadership.
  • Design, update, and deliver safety training programs and conduct safety meetings to foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement, including analyzing current and recurring incidents to develop targeted training solutions.
  • Evaluate accident data, new operational processes, and machinery for potential safety risks, recommending appropriate resolutions.
  • Facilitate New Hire orientations to ensure that new employees are well-informed about safety protocols, available resources, and contacts within the safety team.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and suggest improvements as necessary.
  • Assist in maintaining the monthly supervisor safety training matrix by collecting required data for relevant reports.
  • Understand existing safety emergency plans and develop strategies for newly identified potential emergencies, ensuring readiness for implementation if an emergency occurs.
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position does not include supervisory responsibilities. It is an individual contributor role requiring competencies such as Functional/Technical Skills, Action Orientation, Problem Solving, Quick Learning, and Interpersonal Savvy.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Engineering, Biology, or a related field.
  • A combination of an Associate's degree and relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a four-year degree.
  • Certification in First Aid & CPR.
  • Completion of HAZWOPER training at the technician level.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in a similar setting.
  • Proficient in applying OSHA, DOT, and Workers' Compensation regulations.
  • Strong proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with all organizational levels in a professional and timely manner; multilingual abilities are highly valued.
  • Capability to manage and resolve most issues efficiently while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, coupled with meticulous attention to detail.
  • A strong customer-focused attitude, high energy, and a sense of urgency are essential.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Adhere to departmental and company safety policies and programs.
  • Utilize required personal protective equipment in all mandated areas.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work extended shifts as required by business needs.
  • Capability to work consistently in various environmental conditions, including cold, humid, hot, or dusty settings with moderate noise levels.
  • Ability to navigate around the facility and under equipment as necessary for job duties.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling may be required.
  • Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for up to eight hours.
