The Occupational Health and Safety Director will spearhead and guide the Health & Safety initiatives across two manufacturing facilities within the Architectural Specialties and Gypsum Finishing sectors, as part of the CertainTeed Interior Products Group. This role aligns with the Company’s Vision, Mission Statement, and Core Values. With strategic direction from both the central safety function and local plant leadership, this proactive position will ensure adherence to corporate and provincial safety regulations, cultivate a robust safety culture, and establish comprehensive safety protocols.

This position will report directly to the Local Plant Leadership, with an indirect reporting line to the Area EHS Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver hands-on leadership, coaching, and mentorship to both hourly and salaried personnel across two sites.
  • Identify and rectify potential safety hazards through thorough inspections of facilities, machinery, and safety equipment.
  • Input data into corporate EHS databases and generate monthly reports.
  • Analyze health and safety metrics to inform and drive the WCM Health & Safety Pillar Board, defining and executing objectives.
  • Conduct investigations into workplace incidents to ascertain causes and preventive measures.
  • Engage with employees to gather insights on work environments and incidents, assessing corrective actions taken.
  • Regularly evaluate the workplace to ensure compliance with governmental safety regulations and corporate safety standards.
  • Promote and develop initiatives that foster an autonomous health and safety culture.
  • Conduct audits against corporate safety standards to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with governmental bodies and manage all health and safety-related permits.
  • Oversee the health and safety training program to ensure compliance with corporate safety standards and OSHA regulations.
  • Facilitate joint health and safety team meetings.
  • Perform Risk Assessments with employees and implement strategies to mitigate identified risks.
  • Prioritize risks in accordance with corporate WCM tools.
  • Design and execute Safety Risk Reduction project plans based on Risk Calculator assessments.
  • Communicate safety alerts and evaluate potential occurrences at the facility.
  • Actively participate as a member of national EH&S teams.
  • Ensure that CertainTeed's safety standards are integrated into processes and equipment using WCM principles.
  • Support project teams during the implementation phase and commissioning of equipment.
  • Identify safety improvement opportunities and develop corrective action solutions.
  • Assist in training operators and maintenance staff.
  • Provide guidance to all departments on 5S systems, enforcing plant rules and safety regulations in line with corporate values.
  • In collaboration with the Area EHS Manager and Local HR, offer direction on WCB claims and return-to-work programs.
  • Maintain Industrial Hygiene standards in accordance with company and legal requirements.
  • Organize safety events and campaigns.
  • May assist with engineering projects, process implementation, and regulatory affairs by providing risk assessments specific to each project.
  • Drive the STOPS program within the facility.
Is this position a fit for you?
  • Bachelor's degree in EHS, HR, or a related field, or equivalent training and experience demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of Occupational Health & Safety principles and OSHA regulations.
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in environmental and safety roles, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing context.
  • 3+ years of experience in organizational health and safety.
  • Previous experience in facility management and a background in industrial settings.
  • Self-motivated and a collaborative team player.
  • Proven ability to influence others without direct authority.
  • Lead by example.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety standards.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Capable of working independently on assigned tasks.
  • Adaptable and open-minded with strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in using computers and Microsoft Office Suite.
