Position Overview:

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate specializing in TRISO nuclear fuels within our Computational Mechanics and Materials division. This role operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off, and is based out of our Computing Collaboration Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth analyses of advanced nuclear fuels, particularly TRISO and layered-architecture fuels, utilizing the finite element fuel performance code, BISON.
  • Develop and implement simulations that enhance nuclear fuel research capabilities.
  • Create models tailored for nuclear fuels and materials, applying them across various reactor designs.
  • Demonstrate the significance of simulations through diverse methodologies and collaborations with multiple programs and sponsors.
  • Contribute to engineering projects addressing complex scientific challenges in the field.

Qualifications:

  • Possess knowledge and coursework relevant to the performance of nuclear fuels and materials under irradiation.
  • Experience in performing engineering and scientific analyses for advanced fuel types using BISON.
  • Proficient in finite-element analysis techniques.
  • Ability to write and contribute to scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at conferences.
  • Interest in exploring new research areas and developing proposals.
  • Provide peer reviews of related research both internally and externally.
  • Desire to acquire new skills applicable to complex nuclear and material science models.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary R&D team.
  • Proficiency in scientific computing languages such as C++, Python, git, MacOS/Linux, and LaTeX.
  • Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, computational science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field obtained within the last five years.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fuel performance modeling techniques, including numerical methods and constitutive modeling.
  • Basic understanding of experimental measurements or neutronics and fluid mechanics codes for finite-element analysis.
  • Experience in software development and code stewardship.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying scientific results.
  • Advanced skills in scientific computing and object-oriented programming.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual Salary: $96,900
