Position Overview

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Advanced Reactor Engineering to contribute to our Risk Phenomena Modeling division. This role offers a unique opportunity to engage in a 9x80 work schedule at our Research and Education Campus, with hybrid work options potentially available.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in nuclear engineering and technoeconomic analysis related to advanced reactor technologies. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing comprehensive models for advanced reactor designs that incorporate both engineering and economic factors.
  • Focusing on the technoeconomic aspects of microreactors, including cost estimation and pathways for mass production.
  • Utilizing optimization tools and scripting for reactor design enhancement.
  • Conducting research on manufacturing techniques suitable for microreactor production.
  • Disseminating findings through reports, journal articles, and presentations.

Additionally, the role will involve simulations in neutronics and thermal hydraulics, prioritizing the use of codes developed under the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program. Technoeconomic modeling will be executed using the Algorithm for Comprehensive Cost Estimation of Reactor Technologies (ACCERT) methodology.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering with expertise in reactor physics, neutronics, thermal hydraulics, and technoeconomics.
  • Completion of PhD requirements within the last five years.
  • Proficiency in English is essential.
  • Experience with advanced reactor technologies, particularly microreactors.
  • Knowledge of reactor physics and engineering analysis.
  • Experience with NEAMS tools, especially MOOSE-based codes.
  • Familiarity with ACCERT methodology for cost estimation.
  • General understanding of advanced manufacturing techniques.
