Role Overview:

As a Senior Scientist, you will utilize a wide range of technologies to create and validate biomarker assays aimed at confirming drug target engagement, elucidating mechanisms of action, and assessing patient responses. You will work collaboratively with internal pre-clinical and clinical teams, as well as external collaborators, to implement translational biomarker strategies for drug development candidates. A strong technical foundation in immunoassays for protein quantification and enzyme activity assessment in biological samples, including biofluids, is essential. A keen interest in laboratory-based assay development, validation, and pre-clinical sample analysis is highly desirable. Experience in proteomics and a background in neurodegenerative disorders will be advantageous.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and execute robust clinical biomarker assays tailored for specific purposes.
  • Identify and assess new technologies to enhance evolving translational biomarker strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct laboratory work independently and manage the outsourcing of studies to contract research organizations (CROs).
  • Facilitate the transition of biomarker assays from basic research to clinical application by providing technical expertise on assay validation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in immunoassay development and validation, collaborating with project teams, biomarker leaders, clinical operations, and regulatory affairs to implement these assays in clinical trials.
  • Collaborate with external academic and industry experts to broaden Neurocrine's knowledge in biofluid biomarkers.
  • Analyze and manage complex datasets, demonstrating a strong understanding of advanced data analysis and statistical methodologies.
  • Maintain and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs) and compile data summaries for conducted experiments.
  • Ensure compliance with all SOPs, safety, and quality assurance standards consistently.
  • Provide training and supervision to junior staff as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or
  • Master’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience, or
  • PhD or equivalent with some relevant experience, which may include postdoctoral experience.
  • Proven track record in implementing immunoassays, proteomics, and cell-based assays (e.g., flow cytometry) for biomarker discovery using pre-clinical or clinical samples.
  • Extensive experience working with tissue samples and/or biofluids.
  • Familiarity with techniques such as ELISA, IP, western blotting, flow cytometry, high content imaging, and HTRF.
  • Experience managing contract research organizations is preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of various biomarker assay platforms (e.g., Luminex, MesoScale Discovery, and/or SIMOA) is advantageous.
  • Experience in exosome purification in humans and non-clinical species is a plus.
  • Experience working with human biospecimens is beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of project and group objectives and methodologies.
  • Ability to identify anomalous results and interpret experimental outcomes effectively.
  • Proficient in explaining the processes behind data and the implications of results.
  • Strong knowledge in one or more scientific disciplines, with a focus on becoming an expert in a specific area.
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Proficient in using a variety of laboratory equipment and tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and mentor junior staff.
  • Excellent computer proficiency.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Detail-oriented while maintaining a broader perspective on scientific impact.
  • Capable of managing multiple deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
