Role Responsibilities
We are in search of a dedicated Systems Engineer with a focus on Mechanical Engineering, who is enthusiastic about steering the development of engineering systems for future nuclear weapon initiatives.
The ideal candidate will become part of a dynamic, cross-functional team that plays a crucial role in the design of Advanced & Exploratory (A&E) nuclear warhead and delivery systems. Responsibilities include:
- Assessing viable design options to facilitate informed architectural choices.
- Establishing a technically sound design with a robust qualification framework.
- Identifying key requirements to support the development of Stockpile-to-Target Sequences (STS) and Military Characteristics (MCs).
As the project evolves, the successful candidate will also contribute as a Mechanical Engineer in the warhead design process.
Daily tasks may involve:
- Planning and executing Sandia's science and engineering initiatives, spanning fundamental research to applied development.
- Conducting advanced engineering programs, focusing on new technologies and their demonstration in simulated settings.
- Defining weapon system requirements based on anticipated future deterrence needs.
- Guiding the development of weapon systems' architectures and configurations.
- Performing system-level design analysis to integrate various components into a cohesive functional system.
- Identifying future technology development needs for Sandia.
- Creating advanced engineering prototypes, conducting tests, and analyzing results.
- Collaborating with external partners to define program objectives and requirements.
Due to the nature of the work, the successful candidate must be able to work onsite.
Compensation
Salary range: $109,300 - $217,400. Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or a related discipline with a minimum of five years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with at least one year of relevant experience; or a Ph.D. in a related field.
- Active DOE Q-level security clearance.
- Ability to obtain and maintain additional clearances as necessary.
- Experience with nuclear weapons systems and associated components.
- Familiarity with weapons effects or penetration mechanics.
- Experience in testing, instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including report writing and formal presentations.
- Proven ability to engineer prototype systems or components in ambiguous environments.
- Experience collaborating with NSE Design and Production Agencies.
- Ability to thrive in uncertain conditions and demonstrate effective teamwork.
- Experience engaging with the modeling and simulation community.
- Technical expertise in areas such as:
- Computer Aided Design (e.g., Solidworks, CREO).
- Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
- Hands-on testing and debugging of complex systems.
- Engineering modeling and simulation software.
- Optimization methods and decision-making tools.
- Multidisciplinary Design and Analysis methods.
- Willingness to travel up to 25% as required.
