Your Role
The Technical Systems Security Department is in search of a Research and Development Systems Engineer to spearhead technical initiatives aimed at enhancing Sandia's ability to address evolving global security challenges. This role involves the development of advanced nuclear security systems through thorough component assessment and testing. The interdisciplinary approach employed in our security systems allows for informed design choices that benefit both Sandia and the Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA). This position will engage with key stakeholders and customers within the DOE and the Nuclear Security Enterprise, leading a team of experts who analyze and shape DOE/NNSA policies.
On a typical day, your responsibilities may include:
- Directing technical teams in the design and development of nuclear security systems and components, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
- Conducting technical evaluations and analyses for the lifecycle management of new security system designs, collaborating with internal and external experts across various scientific and technical fields.
- Leading the creation and application of scientific theories and engineering methods to innovate new designs, concepts, products, processes, or systems.
- Managing multi-disciplinary teams with extensive knowledge of national security challenges, emerging threats, and countermeasure technologies that can be integrated into next-generation nuclear security systems.
- Overseeing a portfolio of technical nuclear security projects across various DOE/NNSA sites nationwide.
- Engaging with high-level DOE/NNSA clients to guide strategic and technical program direction, ensuring alignment with customer needs through effective expectation management and project oversight.
Due to the nature of the work, this position requires onsite presence.
Compensation
Salary range: $109,300 - $217,400
*Salary is estimated and will be finalized based on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience, along with any applicable geographic salary adjustments.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Computer, Mechanical) with a minimum of five years of relevant experience.
- Experience with Physical Security Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Access Control Systems (ACS).
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and an SCI clearance, which may involve a polygraph examination.
- Master's degree in Engineering (e.g., Electrical, Computer, Mechanical).
- Proven leadership and technical expertise in DOE/NNSA policy, national security, and strategic planning.
- In-depth understanding of national security issues, emerging threats, and technologies relevant to advanced nuclear security systems.
- Experience in leading comprehensive physical security projects from design through implementation.
- Technical proficiency in nuclear security systems, including alarm, communication, and video systems, in accordance with DOE/NNSA requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to manage technical teams effectively in high-pressure environments.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, capable of fostering trust-based relationships with diverse stakeholders.
The Safeguards & Security Operations Group consists of three departments, including the Technical Security Systems (TSS) department at Sandia National Laboratories. The TSS department is dedicated to providing a secure and sustainable electronic security framework to support Sandia's critical missions, ensuring compliance with Department of Energy (DOE) standards through rigorous maintenance and integration with other security departments.

Security Clearance Requirements
Sandia is mandated by the DOE to conduct pre-employment drug testing and background checks, including verification of personal references, credit history, and law enforcement records. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Holding dual citizenship may affect eligibility for security clearance.
