Position Overview

The Air Delivered Weapons Systems Tester Development Department and the Ballistic Missile Tester Development Department are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic R&D Electrical Engineer to become part of a vibrant, technical team. The successful candidate will contribute to the design, fabrication, qualification, and deployment of advanced system-level nuclear weapon testers for the Stockpile Surveillance Program.

On a typical day, your responsibilities may include:
  • Creating equipment to simulate the delivery sequences of nuclear weapons in a controlled environment.
  • Leading or collaborating with a diverse team of design engineers, systems engineers, technologists, and subject matter experts.
  • Designing data acquisition systems to capture various normal and unique signals generated by the tester or the unit under examination.
  • Defining custom cables, boards, chassis, or racks.
  • Integrating and troubleshooting tester systems to monitor the condition of the U.S. Stockpile.
  • Validating tester designs against specified customer requirements.
  • Testing weapon systems, subsystems, or components.
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be prepared to work onsite. Some travel may be necessary for this role.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $109,300 - $217,400.

*The salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, as well as any applicable geographic salary differentials.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or a related STEM field, along with one (1) year of directly relevant experience; OR a Bachelor's degree in the specified field, with five (5) years of directly relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in analog and digital circuit design and analysis.
  • Experience in creating and interpreting design definition drawings (e.g., wiring diagrams, power distribution diagrams).
  • Familiarity with standard electrical laboratory equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, arbitrary waveform generators).
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent (DoD Top Secret clearance).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Sigma 15 access, which may necessitate a polygraph examination.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in the aforementioned field, with four (4) years of directly relevant experience; OR a Bachelor's degree in the same field, with eight (8) years of directly relevant experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Leading or participating in high-performing, multidisciplinary teams.
    • Electronic testing and troubleshooting.
    • Utilizing common radar test equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers).
    • Custom printed circuit board design.
    • Modeling and simulation.
    • Programming (C++, C#, MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW, Python, Java).
    • Interface design (e.g., electrical-mechanical, hardware-software, component-component).
    • Electronic fabrication.
    • Designing, developing, and qualifying complex electronics and systems.
    • Requirements analysis.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic principles, radar fundamentals, and the operation of radar components (e.g., transmitters, receivers, antennas).
  • Proven ability to work safely in a laboratory environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to process large volumes of information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
About Our Team

We are recognized as the leading test equipment engineering team for the Stockpile Surveillance Program. Our work involves designing, developing, and maintaining qualified test systems used to assess the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nuclear weapon stockpile. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain insights into the U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise, nuclear weapon design and functionality, and the critical role of Sandia National Laboratories in the nation's nuclear deterrence strategy.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to begin, or an equivalent active security clearance from another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is mandated by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review, which includes checks of personal references, credit history, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Candidates must be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (i.e., U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be affected.
