Job Overview

The Electrical Cost Estimator plays a crucial role in the comprehensive bidding and estimating process, engaging in activities from the initial review of plans and specifications to the solicitation and negotiation of pricing with contractors and suppliers, culminating in the completion of the bid/estimating effort. This position involves performing quantity take-offs, pricing, scoping, and bidding for various construction projects.


Key Responsibilities & Qualifications
  • Execute quantity take-offs and establish pricing for electrical estimates.
  • Formulate and document logical assumptions during the conceptual estimating phase and apply these to take-off tasks.
  • Liaise with architects and consultants to clarify and document discussions regarding project intent, scope of work, materials, and scheduling requirements.
  • Review milestone documents to identify changes in work scope and develop pricing for value alternatives and recommendations.
  • Actively engage in the internal estimate review process.
  • Assist in the final assembly of estimates, adhering to McCarthy standards, for presentation to stakeholders.
  • Solicit trade partners during the bidding phase.
  • Analyze and scope trade partner electrical proposals.
  • Post-bid, gather and organize all bid information for input into the historical cost database.
  • Support field operations with change order pricing.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of MEP codes and any changes to these codes.
  • Prepare scopes of work for subcontract agreements.
  • Coordinate electrical scopes with architectural, structural, and mechanical estimators.
  • Prepare budget comparisons between current and previous estimates.
  • Utilize current technology to enhance service delivery on both hard bid and negotiated projects.
  • Schedule and conduct meetings with trade partners during the face-to-face scope meeting process.
  • Participate in the schedule preparation and evaluation process with McCarthy and trade partner teams.
  • Be knowledgeable about the McCarthy BIM process and effectively communicate it to trade partners.

Trade Partner Proposal Analysis

  • Direct, coordinate, and provide necessary information and documentation to trade partners.
  • Prepare contractual exhibits outlining the scope of work for subcontracts.
  • Engage in hard bid estimating and GMP budgeting activities by soliciting trade partner support and evaluating their proposals.

Industry Knowledge & Relationships

  • Foster relationships with trade partners to secure a competitive edge for McCarthy.
  • Attend industry events and represent McCarthy in a professional manner.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external clients of McCarthy.
  • Stay updated with the latest estimating technologies and methodologies.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical estimating or a Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering.
  • Proven experience in estimating large-scale projects is preferred.
  • General understanding of construction principles and processes.
  • Familiarity with various contractual delivery methods, including negotiated bids, hard bids, and GMP processes.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to utilize or learn estimating software such as WinEST, TSI, Quick Pen, Accubid, OST, QTO, and others.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate behaviors aligned with McCarthy's core values.
