Project Engineer - Heavy Civil Construction

Position Overview:

Assist the Superintendent and Project Manager in overseeing all facets of a construction project, including financial management, cost reporting, and field operations. This role is primarily field-based.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support pre-construction tasks as required: project planning and design; interpretation of designs and blueprints.
  • Possess a clear understanding of specifications, drawings, standards, and the scope of work for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Demonstrate, communicate, and reinforce all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Interpret specifications, designs, and drawings, and prepare quantity takeoffs.
  • Create drawings and sketches to facilitate construction work, change orders, estimates, etc.
  • Verify work quantities for invoicing and payment purposes.
  • Maintain submittal logs and ensure timely receipt and review of submittals and shop drawings.
  • Ensure accurate completion of craft time cards, reflecting hours worked and tasks performed; verify cost codes for all purchases, time cards, contracts, equipment time, and any other cost-related items.
  • Maintain as-built drawings; post RFIs, bulletins, and ASIs as necessary.
  • Keep RFI logs updated.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and value engineering processes.
  • Develop, implement, and manage project engineering procedures and documentation; track and log all documentation.
  • Capture weekly job site photographs.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Department to ensure accurate maintenance of project safety records.
  • Assist in quality control efforts.
  • Help prepare project status reports and participate in project status meetings; assist in the creation of meeting minutes.
  • Support project close-out activities.
  • May assist with estimates as required.
Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent technical training and related experience.
  • 2-4 years of field construction experience required.
  • E.I.T. certification preferred but not mandatory.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced staff.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting plans.
  • Comprehensive understanding of cost analysis and estimating.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to carry tools and equipment, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and must have good vision and hearing (either naturally or with correction). The employee must frequently work or walk on uneven surfaces and is required to wear steel-toed boots at all times. It is mandatory for the employee to wear approved personal protective equipment.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and perform various tasks while exposed to outdoor elements or confined spaces. Tasks may involve repetition of short duration according to established procedures and the evaluation of information using measurable standards.
