As a Medical Laboratory Technician/Scientist, your responsibilities will include collecting, preparing, and conducting a variety of laboratory tests of varying complexity. You will assist in departmental procedures, including quality assurance, proficiency testing, calibrations, and other related laboratory duties while mentoring new staff. Each day, you will demonstrate a commitment to customer satisfaction, professionalism, and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect and prepare biological specimens for analysis using appropriate techniques while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Assess specimen acceptability within established guidelines, avoiding hemolysis, QNS, and incorrect anticoagulant use.
  • Conduct all applicable testing with quality, speed, and accuracy in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Analyze test results and report findings promptly to meet physician expectations.
  • Ensure timely reporting of patient results for the assigned department and investigate issues related to collection, result reporting, and turnaround time.
  • Organize departmental workload for optimal efficiency.
  • Evaluate and interpret test results based on individual specifications, performing necessary calculations and applying laboratory results to patient therapy.
  • Ensure initial calibration and standardization of equipment by applying criteria for acceptable performance limits.
  • Answer phone inquiries promptly and courteously, demonstrating good judgment in directing calls to the appropriate section.
  • Facilitate smooth transitions of duties between shifts by accurately conveying pertinent information to other healthcare personnel.
  • Demonstrate the willingness and ability to instruct other staff and students.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:

Required:
Education - Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or in a chemical, physical, or biological science. Alternatively, a high school graduate or equivalent who has successfully completed an official military medical laboratory procedures course of at least 50 weeks duration and held the military enlisted occupation specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).

Certification - Medical Lab Technician (MLT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technology (AMT), or Military Laboratory Specialist.

Preferred:

Education - Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, or biological sciences or Clinical Laboratory Science or an Associate's degree with Medical Technologists (HEW).

Certification - Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Certification - American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)/American Medical Technology (AMT) or Health and Human Services (HEW).

Experience - 1+ years of laboratory experience.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
