Rapid City Medical Center is seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Technician to join our dynamic medical laboratory team. This full-time role involves executing a variety of technical laboratory tasks, including but not limited to chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology. The technician will be responsible for reporting test outcomes in accordance with clinic protocols, ensuring quality control during specimen collection, maintaining laboratory equipment, and adhering to all relevant policies and OSHA regulations. Phlebotomy procedures may also be required as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a comprehensive range of laboratory tests and services.
  • Deliver specialized expertise in microbiology, urinalysis, serology, hematology, immunohematology, hemostasis, and chemistry while adhering to infectious disease safety protocols.
  • Ensure the integrity of samples.
  • Evaluate, interpret, and validate test results for accuracy.
  • Process samples for on-site testing or coordinate with contracted reference laboratories.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in patient results.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Oversee quality control and operational functionality of instruments.
  • Prepare the laboratory for inspections by regulatory bodies.
  • Provide customer service regarding laboratory inquiries.
  • Assist healthcare providers with questions related to test processes, results, or sample collection methods.
  • Train new staff and phlebotomy students.
  • Engage in continuing education initiatives.
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients as required.
  • Monitor, maintain, and replenish laboratory supplies.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
An Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, or a related field with at least one year of clinical laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

-or- A high school diploma or equivalent, along with graduation from an HHS-approved laboratory training program.

Certification:
Candidates must possess certification as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician from ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology) or equivalent certification from an HHS-approved laboratory training program.

Work Environment:
This position involves movement among various outpatient and inpatient settings, with potential exposure to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, and cleaning chemicals.

Physical and Mental Demands:
Ability to walk to different locations, bend, reach, and stand or walk for extended periods. Must be capable of lifting up to 30 pounds of supplies and equipment and assisting with patient transport. Occasional stress may arise from managing priorities.
