Position Overview:

The Oncology Clinical Nurse III is a highly skilled and knowledgeable healthcare professional who delivers nursing care with exceptional technical expertise and organizational capabilities, along with strong critical thinking skills. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of nursing practices specific to the Oncology patient demographic, ensuring that specialized knowledge and skills are effectively utilized in managing the care of individual patients or groups and their families. The Clinical Nurse III serves as a vital resource for colleagues regarding patient care matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and meticulously document all components of the nursing process and relevant interventions for both direct and indirect care services to Oncology patients, ensuring their safety, comfort, hygiene, and protection in a timely manner.
  • Provide comprehensive care to complex patients, which includes administering medications and therapeutic agents necessary for treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitation plans.
  • Conduct skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and initiate peripheral venous access as required.
  • Monitor, assess, and promptly adjust care plans based on observed signs and symptoms of illness, medication reactions, and overall patient condition.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to plan and implement personalized patient care based on observations, ensuring appropriate reporting, referrals, and care in line with established procedures. Initiate emergency protocols when necessary.
  • Provide care to diverse patient populations, recognizing cultural differences and identifying each patient's readiness for learning and ability to follow instructions.
  • Tailor patient care to meet specific needs, including cultural, spiritual, age-related, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, educational, familial, and health condition considerations.
  • Identify and evaluate patient safety concerns, taking into account age and developmental factors, and implement interventions to ensure a safe environment.
  • Assist colleagues, new staff, temporary staff, and students, and may take on the role of preceptor.
  • When assigned as charge nurse, oversee unit activities throughout the shift, including authorizing incidental overtime and initiating the appropriate chain of command.
  • Actively participate in at least 50% of unit meetings, providing constructive feedback to help guide unit direction.
  • Serve as a change advocate and engage in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
  • Complete all required skills and proficiency assessments.
  • Establish IV access using peripheral or central catheters in accordance with protocols, ensuring that medications are prepared only after IV access is confirmed and laboratory results are verified.
  • Administer IV therapy as directed by medical personnel.

Educational Requirements:

An Associate's Degree or College Diploma is required, while a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program is preferred.

Licensure and Certification:

  • A valid RN license from the state of California is mandatory.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certification is necessary.
  • OCN Oncology Certified Nurse credential is required.
  • Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse designation is preferred.

Experience Requirements:

A minimum of three (3) years of RN experience in an acute care environment is required, with three (3) years of experience in an Oncology specialty area being highly preferred.
