Oncology Clinical Nurse III

A Clinical Nurse III specializing in Oncology is a highly skilled and knowledgeable healthcare professional who delivers nursing care with exceptional technical expertise and organizational capabilities, alongside strong critical thinking skills. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of nursing practices tailored to the Oncology patient demographic, consistently applying specialized knowledge in managing care for individuals or groups of patients and their families. The Clinical Nurse III serves as a valuable resource for colleagues regarding patient care matters.
Key Responsibilities:
Accurately provides and documents nursing process components and relevant interventions for both direct and indirect patient care services in Oncology, ensuring the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of patients in a timely manner. Delivers comprehensive care services to complex patients, which includes administering medications and therapeutic agents essential for treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitation plans. Conducts skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and initiates peripheral venous access. Observes and evaluates patient conditions, adjusting care plans promptly based on symptoms, medication reactions, and overall physical status. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to plan and implement individualized patient care based on observations, ensuring appropriate reporting, referrals, and care in line with standardized procedures. Initiates emergency protocols when necessary. Provides care to diverse patient populations, recognizing cultural differences and assessing patients' readiness for learning and ability to follow instructions. Tailors patient care to meet specific needs, including cultural, spiritual, age-related, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, educational, family, and health condition considerations. Identifies and evaluates patient safety concerns, implementing interventions to create a safe environment and assessing the effectiveness of these measures. Assists colleagues, new staff, temporary personnel, and students, and may take on the role of a preceptor. When designated as charge nurse, oversees unit activities throughout the shift, including authorizing incidental overtime and following the appropriate chain of command. Actively participates in unit meetings, contributing constructive feedback to support unit objectives. Acts as a change agent and participates in departmental quality improvement initiatives. Completes required skills and proficiencies as mandated. Establishes IV access using peripheral or central catheters per protocol, ensuring drug preparation occurs only after IV access is confirmed and lab results are verified. Administers IV therapy as prescribed by the physician.Educational Requirements:
An Associate's Degree or College Diploma is required, while a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited program is preferred.
Licensure and Certification:
A valid RN license from the state of California is required. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is mandatory. ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certification is required. OCN Oncology Certified Nurse designation is required. Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse credential is preferred.Experience Requirements:
A minimum of three (3) years of RN experience in an acute care environment is required, with three (3) years of experience in an Oncology specialty being highly preferred.
