The Caltech Merkin Institute for Translational Research is seeking a highly experienced and accomplished Scientific Director to lead our efforts in advancing translational research in the biomedical sciences. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in driving our mission to foster and accelerate translational research, and to translate scientific discoveries into tangible benefits for society.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement research plans, aims, and operational objectives for Merkin-funded projects, ensuring alignment with our institute's strategic goals.
- Provide scientific guidance and leadership to researchers and grantees, facilitating the translation of scientific discoveries into practical applications.
- Collaborate with investigators from diverse fields to advance our understanding of complex biomedical problems and to develop innovative solutions.
- Work closely with the Merkin Director and Executive Director to ensure effective communication and coordination across our institute.
- Identify and facilitate changes in research processes to support the fulfillment of our institute's vision and organizational goals.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including researchers, industry partners, and funding agencies.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in translational research and apply this knowledge to inform our research strategies and initiatives.
- PhD or equivalent in bio-science or a related field.
- At least 8 years of research and management experience, including successful grant writing and fundraising.
- Proven track record of developing and evaluating biomedical research teams, collaboratives, or consortia in university or private sectors.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience leading and coordinating multidisciplinary research projects or technology pipelines, including creating necessary project infrastructure and conceiving short- and long-term strategic goals.
- Comprehensive technical and scientific expertise, with a strong understanding of translational research principles and practices.
- Experience on and leading interdisciplinary project teams, with a proven ability to facilitate collaboration and communication among team members.
- Experience in scientific project review, including serving as a scientific journal editor or reviewer or participating in NIH and NSF grant review panels.
- PhD degree in bio-science or a related field.
- Expertise in research methodologies and statistics relevant to translational research.
- Experience working with projects that have achieved translational impact in clinical settings.
- Experience serving as an editor and/or reviewer for a scientific journal.
