Position Summary

We are in search of a Compliance Specialist who will be instrumental in ensuring that our organization adheres to environmental regulations and best practices, particularly in managing the tailings basin. This position involves overseeing compliance, conducting inspections, and liaising with regulatory agencies to maintain environmental standards and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local environmental regulations and standards.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary documentation and reports for environmental compliance.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities and operations to monitor compliance and identify potential issues.
  • Develop and implement training programs for staff on environmental compliance requirements and best practices.
  • Establish, execute, and uphold plans to manage hazardous materials, wastewater, stormwater, and other environmental risks.
  • Act as a liaison for environmental compliance matters with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate communication between the organization and regulatory bodies, addressing compliance inquiries and resolving issues.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of environmental permits, ensuring compliance with permit conditions.
  • Conduct internal audits to evaluate compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
  • Identify non-compliance issues and recommend corrective actions to address deficiencies and prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with staff and management to plan, prepare, and develop environmental sustainability programs and policies for projects.
  • Manage documents, data, and reports within Mesabi's Environmental Management System.
  • Assist in preparing annual reports and other environmental documentation in accordance with current permits.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental compliance, with a preference for experience in air permitting and compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and management practices.
  • Proficiency in compliance monitoring and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical abilities.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
  • This role involves a combination of fieldwork and office responsibilities. Fieldwork will be conducted year-round, exposing you to various weather conditions. Office duties will require working in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.
