Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Compliance Specialist to oversee the organization's adherence to environmental regulations and best practices, with a specific emphasis on managing the tailings basin. This position entails monitoring compliance, performing inspections, and liaising with regulatory bodies to maintain environmental standards and safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and standards.
  • Prepare and maintain necessary documentation and reports related to environmental compliance.
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities and operations to monitor adherence to environmental standards and identify potential concerns.
  • Design and implement training programs for staff on environmental compliance requirements and best practices.
  • Develop, execute, and sustain plans addressing hazardous materials, wastewater, stormwater, and similar environmental risks.
  • Act as a liaison for environmental compliance matters with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate communication between the organization and regulatory entities, addressing compliance inquiries and resolving issues.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of environmental permits, ensuring compliance with permit conditions.
  • Conduct internal audits to evaluate compliance with environmental regulations and company policies.
  • Identify non-compliance issues and propose corrective actions to rectify deficiencies and prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with staff and management to plan, prepare, and develop environmental sustainability programs and policies for projects.
  • Manage documents, data, and reports within Mesabi's Environmental Management System.
  • Support the preparation of annual reports and other environmental documentation required for compliance with current permits.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental compliance, with a preference for experience in air permitting and compliance.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations and management practices.
  • Proficient in compliance monitoring and reporting.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Robust analytical, problem-solving, and technical abilities.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
Physical Requirements
  • This role involves a combination of fieldwork and office responsibilities. Daily fieldwork will expose you to various weather conditions, while office duties will require work at a desk with a laptop and phone.
