ABOUT GARDENS OF GOLDEN GATE PARK

The mission of Gardens of Golden Gate Park is to connect individuals with nature, the environment, and one another. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department and the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society, focusing on the joint operation of key attractions.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager of Interpretive Programs is an effective communicator, skilled in articulating the mission of Gardens of Golden Gate Park to a variety of audiences through diverse platforms. With outstanding organizational, event planning, and project management capabilities, this individual has a proven history of establishing objectives, adhering to timelines, and executing programs while maintaining a focus on overarching goals. This role is pivotal in leading the strategy, development, and implementation of interpretive content both onsite and online at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.

In this capacity, the Manager will oversee the execution of the new Interpretive Master Plan and elements of the Strategic Plan, with the aim of fostering connections between people, plants, and the environment. By understanding and effectively conveying the needs and messaging of the Gardens, this manager aspires to inspire every visitor. Close collaboration with the Directors of Education and Programs & Partnerships is essential for the ongoing development and enhancement of interpretive initiatives throughout the organization.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate to establish cross-departmental interpretation frameworks, strategies, and evaluations informed by the Interpretive Master Plan and Strategic Plan.
  • Lead a collaborative effort in the development of interpretive signage, exhibits, programs, and assessment of public programming impact.
  • Manage the interpretive program budget in partnership with the Directors of Education and Programs & Partnerships.
  • Utilize observation, evaluation, and public feedback to assess interpretive programs, documenting outcomes with data and visual presentations for clarity.
  • Oversee interpretation volunteers, managing content development, materials, and training programs across teams.
  • Foster a culture of interpretation at all organizational levels, prioritizing meaningful connections to the Gardens for visitors.
  • Coordinate visit planning tools, including physical and digital resources, to meet visitor needs while continuously enhancing visitor journey maps and interpretive strategies.
  • Contribute to the design, installation, and evaluation of signage and exhibits throughout the Gardens.
  • Enhance visitor experiences through cross-departmental collaboration, nurturing long-term relationships with guests and members.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 4+ years of leading interpretive initiatives at a natural history, life sciences, or botanical institution.
  • Proficient in utilizing interpretive master plans to develop a diverse and effective engagement strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize both short-term and long-term projects, showcasing strategic thinking and strong organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of earning respect and support from diverse stakeholders, including staff, donors, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Previous supervisory and management experience preferred.
  • Strong customer service, hospitality, and diplomacy skills, with the ability to maintain composure under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability for consistent open communication, collaboration, and strategic thinking within the organization.
ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS
  • Generally, the working days are Monday through Friday, but flexibility is required for evenings, weekends, and travel between garden sites as needed.
  • Eligible for a hybrid work schedule with a minimum of 3 days onsite weekly.
  • Able to engage in a range of physical activities, including prolonged standing or sitting, light lifting, climbing stairs, and occasionally working in varying weather conditions.
