About Gardens of Golden Gate Park

The mission of Gardens of Golden Gate Park is to connect individuals with plants, the environment, and one another. This initiative is a collaboration between the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department and the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society, managing iconic locations such as the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, and San Francisco Botanical Garden. This partnership is defined by a Lease & Management Agreement that delineates the responsibilities of each organization, focusing on areas such as volunteer engagement, education, visitor experience, and more.

The Conservatory of Flowers, established in 1879, is a celebrated landmark showcasing unique plant species and promoting awareness of rainforest conservation. The Japanese Tea Garden, the oldest public Japanese garden in North America, offers visitors a serene experience rooted in traditional aesthetics. The San Francisco Botanical Garden, a 55-acre living museum, features a diverse collection of over 8,000 plant species from around the globe.

Position Summary

The Interpretive Program Manager is an effective communicator skilled in conveying the mission of Gardens of Golden Gate Park to varied audiences through multiple channels. This role requires strong organizational, event planning, and project management capabilities, with a proven history of achieving objectives and implementing programs while maintaining a focus on overarching goals. The manager will lead the strategy, development, and execution of interpretive content both onsite and online.

In this capacity, the Interpretive Program Manager will be responsible for executing the new Interpretive Master Plan and elements of the Strategic Plan, aimed at fostering connections between people, plants, and the environment. This individual will work closely with the Directors of Education and Programs & Partnerships to enhance interpretive initiatives across the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement cross-departmental interpretation frameworks and strategies aligned with the Interpretive Master Plan and Strategic Plan.
  • Lead efforts in creating interpretive signage, exhibits, and programs while evaluating their impact on the mission.
  • Manage the interpretive program budget in collaboration with the Directors of Education and Programs & Partnerships.
  • Utilize assessments and public feedback to evaluate interpretive programs, presenting findings through data and visual formats.
  • Oversee interpretation volunteers, guiding content development and training initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of interpretation throughout the organization, ensuring meaningful connections for visitors across all garden sites.
  • Coordinate planning tools for visitors, enhancing their experience through physical and digital resources.
  • Contribute to the design and evaluation of signage and exhibits throughout the Gardens.
  • Enhance visitor experiences through collaboration across departments, building lasting relationships with guests and members.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience leading interpretive efforts in a natural history, life sciences, or botanical setting.
  • Proficient in utilizing interpretive master plans to develop effective engagement strategies.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and timelines.
  • Proven ability to gain support from diverse stakeholders, including staff, donors, and community partners.
  • Supervisory and management experience preferred.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, capable of maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Demonstrated commitment to open communication and strategic collaboration within the organization.
Additional Expectations
  • Flexible work schedule required, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with a minimum of 3 days onsite weekly.
  • Able to perform various physical tasks, including standing, sitting, light lifting, and navigating different weather conditions.
