Newark, New Jersey, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Position Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. The organization aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through the development and implementation of programs that minimize the need for incarceration and boost economic opportunities, alongside conducting original research to ascertain effective practices and disseminating insights gained from both programming and research to those seeking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center employs approximately 800 individuals and operates with a budget of $100 million, achieving its mission through three core areas: creating and scaling operational programs to test innovative ideas and resolve issues, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and offering expert assistance and policy guidance to justice reform advocates worldwide.

PROGRAM OPERATIONS

The Center's operational programs, including the renowned Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, are designed to test innovative concepts, tackle complex challenges, and strive for systemic transformation within the justice system. These initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, and court-based efforts aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive changes for individuals and families. Through these efforts, the Center has achieved measurable outcomes such as safer neighborhoods, decreased incarceration rates, and improved community perceptions of justice.

RESEARCH INITIATIVES

The Center's research teams, composed of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals with academic training or lived experience, engage in research both domestically and internationally on various issues related to the criminal-legal system and justice. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting exploratory community-based studies, and providing research translation and strategic planning for system stakeholders. The Center has published findings on topics such as court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution, aiming to make their research actionable and relevant to the communities they serve, as well as to policymakers and practitioners.

POLICY AND EXPERT ASSISTANCE

The Center offers practical planning and implementation support to various jurisdictions in reform areas, including problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, and strategies for reducing incarceration and crime. Current expert assistance includes data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and facilitating site visits to operational programs.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Newark Community Solutions initiative, launched in Spring 2011, aims to enhance public perceptions of justice through restorative programming in both court and community settings. The initiative operates a diversion program for individuals charged with minor offenses, an eviction diversion program for tenants facing court actions, and a youth-led diversion program that offers restorative alternatives to juvenile arrest and disciplinary actions. Specialized programming is also available for individuals identifying as veterans or those with mental health needs and/or histories of victimization. Additionally, a community office serves as a central hub for engagement and program activities.

The Center is seeking a Program Coordinator for its Pretrial Assessment and Supportive Services initiative. This program focuses on providing assessment and case management services to individuals released pretrial in Essex County, NJ. Reporting to the Director of New Jersey Programs, the Program Coordinator will manage daily program operations and, when necessary, deliver direct services to participants. This role requires in-person engagement at various locations in the Newark area.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise a co-located team comprising two Case Managers and an Intake Specialist.
  • Oversee dedicated student interns.
  • Manage a caseload of participants, offering case management and community-based referrals for individuals released pretrial.
  • Provide crisis intervention assistance as needed.
  • Collaborate with fellow coordinators and clinicians to review cases and address programmatic challenges.
  • Engage with court and jail stakeholders, providing case updates to legal representatives as required.
  • Ensure data collection and case documentation through regular audits of the case management system.
  • Work with the Center's Data Analytics and Applied Research team for ongoing program evaluation and contractual reporting.
  • Collaborate with the program's independent evaluator to facilitate data reports and community information sessions.
  • Participate in Center-wide initiatives focused on innovative clinical practices and interventions.
  • Represent the Newark Community Solutions initiative at conferences and events.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will possess an MSW or a related degree, with a preferred license. A minimum of 5 years of experience working with the criminal justice population and at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity is required. Strong public speaking, communication, interpersonal, and writing skills are essential. Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The compensation range for this position is $62,500 - $75,000, commensurate with experience. The Center for Justice Innovation offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare with a national network, basic dental coverage, vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance, and flexible spending accounts. Mental health care is prioritized, with services like Talkspace and Ginger available through healthcare plans. A 403(b) retirement plan with a two-to-one employer contribution up to 5% is also provided.
