Newark, New Jersey, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Position Overview

About the Organization

The Center for Justice Innovation is a dedicated non-profit entity that collaborates with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. Our mission is to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. We achieve this through innovative program development, original research, and knowledge sharing aimed at transforming justice systems globally.

With a workforce of 800 employees and an annual budget of $100 million, the Center operates through three core pillars: creating and implementing operational programs to test innovative solutions, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and offering expert guidance to justice reform advocates worldwide.

Operational Programs

Our operational initiatives, including the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, focus on testing innovative approaches, addressing complex issues, and striving for systemic reform within the justice framework. These projects encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry support, and court-based initiatives aimed at minimizing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive changes for individuals and families.

Research Initiatives

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals who are either academically trained or possess lived experiences. They conduct research on various justice-related issues both domestically and internationally. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting community-based studies, and translating research findings into actionable insights for stakeholders. Topics of focus include court reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, and progressive prosecution.

Policy and Expert Guidance

We provide practical planning and implementation support to jurisdictions seeking reform in areas such as problem-solving courts, tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. Our expert assistance encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy advice, and hosting site visits to our operational programs.

Role Summary

The Newark Community Solutions initiative aims to enhance public perceptions of justice through restorative programming. This initiative operates a diversion program for individuals charged with minor offenses, an eviction diversion program for tenants facing court actions, and a youth-led diversion program offering restorative alternatives to juvenile disciplinary actions. Additionally, specialized programming is available for veterans and individuals with mental health needs or histories of victimization.

The Center is seeking a Program Coordinator for Pretrial Services to lead its new Pretrial Assessment and Supportive Services initiative. Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise a co-located team comprising two Case Managers and an Intake Specialist.
  • Oversee student interns dedicated to the program.
  • Manage a caseload of participants, offering case management and community referrals for those released pretrial.

  • Collaborate with fellow coordinators and clinicians to address programmatic challenges and participant needs.
  • Engage with court and jail stakeholders, providing updates to legal representatives as required.
  • Ensure accurate data collection and maintain case notes through regular audits.
  • Work with the Data Analytics and Applied Research team for ongoing program evaluation and reporting.
  • Facilitate program and community data reports in collaboration with independent evaluators.
  • Participate in initiatives focused on advanced clinical practices and incorporate findings into programming.
  • Represent the organization at relevant conferences and events.
  • Perform additional tasks as necessary.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess an MSW or a related degree, with a preferred license. A minimum of 5 years of experience working with the criminal justice population and at least 2 years in a supervisory role is required. Strong public speaking, communication, interpersonal, and writing skills are essential. Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable.

Position Type: Full-time
