Job Overview

The Housing Legal Advocate will collaborate with the housing team to provide legal representation and support to low-income and senior tenants facing eviction challenges. This is a full-time exempt role reporting to the Supervising Attorney.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of unlawful detainer cases, including negotiations, settlements, and trial representation.
  • Provide legal advice on landlord-tenant disputes.
  • Engage with community organizations and coalitions addressing issues affecting eligible populations, including conducting educational presentations on tenant rights.
  • Represent and counsel clients in various legal matters.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation and time records in the case management system.
  • Conduct client interviews and maintain effective communication.
  • Participate in case investigations, witness interviews, and legal research.
  • Draft legal documents, including pleadings and correspondence.
  • Negotiate settlements with opposing parties and their legal representatives.
  • Collaborate with community groups to provide outreach and educational resources.
  • Advocate for policy changes and work with partner organizations to address systemic issues.
  • Supervise the legal work of paralegals, law students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Embrace a multi-cultural perspective that values inclusion and diversity.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to fulfill the organization's mission.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree and active membership in good standing with the California Bar or another state bar with the ability to register as a legal services provider.
  • Preferred familiarity with landlord-tenant law.
  • Preferred litigation experience, including discovery processes and trial representation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a creative and passionate approach to advocacy.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to identify legal issues and provide timely counsel.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort working with low-income clients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal document preparation software.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to engage with diverse clients using client-centered and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Commitment to social justice principles.
  • Ability to embody the values of compassion, collaboration, trust, accountability, and equity in job performance.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for client engagement and community outreach.
  • Preferred bilingual proficiency.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment.
