Position Overview

The Housing Legal Counsel will be an integral part of the housing team, dedicated to advocating for low-income and senior tenants facing eviction challenges. This full-time exempt role will report to the Supervising Attorney.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload focused on representing tenants in unlawful detainer cases, including negotiations, settlements, and court trials.
  • Provide legal advice to tenants regarding landlord-tenant disputes.
  • Engage actively with community organizations and coalitions addressing issues that affect eligible populations, including conducting educational presentations on tenant rights.
  • Represent clients in legal matters, offering counsel and guidance.
  • Maintain precise and comprehensive case notes and time records in the case management system.
  • Conduct client interviews and ensure effective communication.
  • Participate in case investigations, including witness interviews and legal research.
  • Draft legal documents such as pleadings, memoranda, and correspondence.
  • Negotiate and engage in settlement discussions with opposing parties and their legal representatives.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to provide outreach and educational resources.
  • Advocate for policy changes and coordinate with community-based organizations to address systemic issues.
  • Supervise the legal work of paralegals, law students, interns, and volunteers.
  • Embrace a multicultural perspective, promoting inclusion and diversity.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to fulfill the organization's mission.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree and active membership in good standing with the California Bar or another state bar with the ability to register as a legal services provider.
  • Preferred familiarity with landlord-tenant law.
  • Preferred litigation experience, including discovery processes, depositions, and trial representation.
  • Strong advocacy skills with excellent written and verbal communication abilities, along with proficiency in technology and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, initiative, and ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to identify legal issues and provide timely counsel.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort in working with low-income clients.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal document preparation software.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to engage with a diverse client base using client-centered and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Commitment to social justice issues.
  • Ability to embody the values of compassion, collaboration, trust, accountability, and equity in job performance.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for frequent travel within the service area.
  • Preferred prior experience in legal services advocacy.
  • Preferred bilingual proficiency.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered upon request.
