This role is situated within the Protection and Controls Division of the company. The engineer will engage in protection and control projects that cater to our clients' needs. Collaboration with internal and client engineers and designers is essential. Additionally, the engineer will provide, coordinate, and deliver training to junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage both new and existing Protection and Control Projects in substations.
  • Configure relays and perform relay setting calculations using tools such as ASPEN, AcSELerator 5010 (SEL), and GE URPC Software.
  • Prepare design settings in the required format and submit them to the designated Protection and Controls Supervisor through IPS.
  • Review and annotate protection schematics and elementary diagrams.
  • Utilize MOB Port to assess equipment and materials specified by substation engineers for Protection Designers.
  • Work with various equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, buses, reactors, line disconnects, protective relay systems (SEL, ABB, etc.), and SCADA systems.
  • Act as a project lead for protection and control initiatives.
  • Conduct all engineering and design tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Lead and coordinate the work activities of team members and external collaborators to complete substation projects.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff.
  • Identify and implement corrective measures when project objectives are not achieved.
  • Interpret relevant codes and regulations and establish standards for construction projects.
  • Promote engineering professionalism and uphold industry standards.
  • Develop, propose, and execute plans by setting goals, objectives, and requirements that encompass all scheduling, resources, and communication for complex engineering tasks.
  • This position requires occasional travel to field substations.

Qualifications

  • Five to eight years of experience in utility sectors focusing on protection and controls.
  • Experience in managing engineering projects from inception to completion.
  • Proficiency in relay settings and designing one-line diagrams.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited).
  • A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET accredited) will be considered towards experience requirements.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) License is mandatory.

Essential Skills and Abilities

  • Intermediate capability in performing design calculations, including battery sizing, AC and DC loads, system component selection, and circuit protection.
  • Familiarity with standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NERC-PRC, NEC, and NESC.
  • Intermediate understanding of protection and control equipment, relays, and fault analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to comprehend the interrelationships between systems and component equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with others in sharing information and seeking assistance as needed.
  • Willingness and capability to take on leadership roles.
