Overview

The Senior Manager of Marine Operations at MOL (Americas) LLC is tasked with overseeing vessel operations, ensuring marine safety, managing cargo operations, and maintaining quality standards. This role requires effective communication and collaboration with various stakeholders, including business partners, port authorities, regulatory agencies, agents, stevedores, towing companies, and industry organizations, as well as relevant departments at the Tokyo Headquarters for the Pure Car Carrier (PCC) fleet operating in the Americas region of the Pacific Ocean. The scope of responsibility encompasses the management and supervision of teams focused on Operations and Marine Quality/Safety under the guidance of the General Managers mentioned above.

The geographical area of responsibility includes regions east of the International Date Line, spanning from Alaska to the northern passage of the Panama Canal, including the Hawaiian Islands, the West Coast of Canada, Mexico, and Central America.

Key Responsibilities

● Respond to non-standard events such as marine incidents, weather disruptions, vessel scheduling, and provide maritime technical guidance to team members.

● Assist the Corporate Office (Tokyo) Operations Department in decision-making related to vessel operations, ensuring safe and efficient practices through support from the Ship Management Company.

● Collaborate with Operational and Commercial teams in the Corporate Office and MOLAM Area Management to monitor, collect, report, and disseminate industry intelligence regarding labor impacts, regulatory requirements, and marine terminal efficiency.

● Manage vendor relationships, oversee contract negotiations, implement cost management procedures, and execute corrective actions with designated vendors under the supervision of the General Managers.

● Gather information pertinent to safe ship operations across all navigation areas within the region, including ports and shipping routes.

● Supervise maritime technical support for new vessels entering and calling at ports, including the assessment of new port calls.

● Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and local rules necessary for vessel operations, cargo handling, and environmental standards in the management region.

● Attend periodic vessel visits to supervise operations, conduct cargo safety checks, and coordinate with relevant teams at Corporate Headquarters.

● Oversee performance management related to cargo handling incidents and prevention measures, coordinating with Corporate Headquarters on quality improvement initiatives.

● Facilitate communication and support with local OEM port representatives.

● Provide marine technical support for westbound cargo operations.

● Promote and support electric vehicle safety transportation initiatives within the area, including outreach to local OEMs in collaboration with the commercial team.

● Offer marine technical advice for loading plans and local port captain activities.

● Manage contracts with regional Port Captains (Canada and Mexico) and oversee cargo attendance schedules.

● Supervise the planning and execution of special cargo handling operations, providing marine technical advice and commercial support.

● Oversee freight survey results and manage responses as necessary.

● Support local quality audits of OEMs.

● Review and approve vendor invoicing and westbound cargo expenses.

● Review accounting for speed reduction/port charge incentives and other vessel operation-related rebates.

● Select new staff and plan development initiatives under the supervision of the General Managers.

● Evaluate existing staff, facilitate skill development, set goals, and provide implementation support.

● Manage both national and temporary staff.

● Engage in communication and meetings with regulatory bodies, industry associations, and environmental committees as needed, providing local insights to Corporate Headquarters.

● Participate in and advise the Car Carrier Fire Task Force at ports in collaboration with local fire departments.

● Attend port-related events and networking opportunities.

● Create customer value through information sharing on new alternative ports and business development strategies.

● Conduct ongoing research on LNG bunkering and other potential alternative fuel locations in the region.

● Uphold the MOL brand by fostering a positive image and maintaining relationships within the maritime community.

Qualifications

● Graduate from a Maritime Institution or similar specialized maritime technical education.

● Credentialed Seafarer as a Licensed Deck Officer on a commercial vessel (experience with Car Carrier PCC/PCTC vessels is preferred).

● Minimum of 5+ years of sea service experience is preferred.

● Willingness to work weekends and travel domestically and internationally as required, with overnight travel up to 15-20% depending on PCC business needs.

● Proven work experience demonstrating the ability to multitask, along with strong verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and a collaborative team-oriented approach in a multicultural environment.

● Exceptional judgment and decisiveness to safeguard company assets (human life, hull, and cargo) during emergencies.

● Strong leadership abilities to train and manage team members effectively.

● High level of coordination and management skills to ensure seamless communication with various departments and external business partners.

Working Conditions
