Job Summary:

As a Sales Associate at West Marine, customers rely on you for product knowledge and to understand the features, values, and benefits of our products. You are comfortable engaging in customer discussions to fulfill their immediate needs while shopping, as well as recommend additional items or services that will complement their boating experience. You and your team are key to ensuring they leave with the right products to make that happen.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Greet and Receive Customers: Welcome customers in a welcoming manner, creating a positive first impression.
  • Respond to Customer Questions: Provide accurate and helpful responses to customers' inquiries, demonstrating a deep understanding of our products.
  • Drive Sales through Engagement: Engage with customers to understand their needs, making recommendations and suggesting products that meet their requirements.
  • Help Customers Select Products: Assist customers in selecting the right products, ensuring they have the necessary information to make informed purchasing decisions.
  • Direct Customers to Products: Escort customers to the aisle or location of the product they need, providing a seamless shopping experience.
  • Inform Customers about Services: Educate customers about services available, such as drop shipping and special orders, and assess their needs to provide personalized support.
  • Provide Outstanding Customer Service: Deliver exceptional customer service, ensuring customers leave the store satisfied and loyal.
  • Alert Management to Security Issues: Notify management of potential security or loss prevention issues, maintaining a safe and secure shopping environment.
  • Assist with Inventory Management: Help with receiving and stocking merchandise, ensuring accurate inventory levels and efficient stockroom operations.
  • Process Let Downs and Maintain Store Appearance: Process let downs as needed and maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free sales floor and aisle environment.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent Verbal Communication Skills: Possess strong verbal communication skills to effectively engage with customers and colleagues.
  • Excellent Active Listening Skills: Demonstrate active listening skills to understand customer needs and provide personalized support.
  • Excellent Sales and Customer Service Skills: Possess a strong sales acumen and customer service skills to drive sales and deliver exceptional customer experiences.
  • Extensive Knowledge of Merchandise: Have a deep understanding of the products sold, including features, values, and benefits.
  • Ability to Anticipate Customer Needs: Anticipate customer needs and make recommendations to meet their requirements.
  • Ability to Operate Point-of-Sale System: Be able to operate or quickly learn the store's point-of-sale system.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent: Possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with previous boating and/or retail experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged Standing and Walking: Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the retail space.
  • Lifting Up to 40 Pounds: Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds to shoulder height unassisted.
