Role Summary:The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will play a crucial role in our operations, collaborating closely with the Shipyard Manager and team members. We are looking for individuals who demonstrate accountability, ownership, and pride in their work. A minimum of 5 years of experience in a lead mechanic capacity within a shipyard or similar environment is required, along with hands-on mechanical expertise across various equipment.
Key Responsibilities:- Remove machinery from vessels for repair or modification.
- Disassemble, repair, and test machinery such as diesel engines, reduction gears, and both mobile and stationary generators.
- Conduct services and minor repairs on outboard engines.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and modify deck machinery, equipment, and systems.
- Perform plumbing and intake repairs.
- Inspect, service, and repair MSD Units.
- Install and repair motors, pumps, and other machinery utilized by tugs and barges.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and steering systems.
- Conduct maintenance and repair on electrical AC/DC systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance on various equipment.
- Execute rigging duties independently.
- Install navigational electronic systems in wheelhouses.
- Conduct advanced electronic troubleshooting and repairs, interpreting electrical diagrams.
- Prepare parts lists for jobs.
- Reference manufacturer manuals for specifications and recommendations.
- Lead mechanic duties, directing the work of assigned mechanics and laborers to ensure maintenance tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
- Report administrative and disciplinary matters to the supervisor.
- Train junior mechanics and laborers.
- Assist in other departments as needed.
- Proven experience as a marine mechanic.
- Strong knowledge of marine engines and electrical auxiliary systems.
- Familiarity with marine hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, machinery, and assembly drawings.
- Proficient in creating drawings by hand as necessary.
- Understanding of safety procedures, policies, and proper tooling usage in marine maintenance.
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical and control system issues.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Valid TWIC card and state driver's license.
- Skilled in assessing job requirements for repairs.
- Thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities.
- Creative problem-solving and innovative thinking.
- Effective planning, scheduling, and sequencing of work.
- Strong communication and team-building skills.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations.
- Analytical, reliable, and detail-oriented.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and execute complex instructions.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including walking, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Capable of lifting heavy items and working in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
