Description

The Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for conducting investigations related to traffic incidents, enforcing regulations, and ensuring public safety through adherence to laws and ordinances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular attendance to fulfill job duties effectively.
  • Engage in traffic enforcement, control, and accident investigations while providing first aid as necessary.
  • Utilize sound judgment to manage emergency situations independently.
  • Participate in mandatory extra duty assignments as required.
  • Be available for consultation during major emergencies via radio or telephone.
  • Respond to critical incidents, including accidents and disturbances, ensuring law enforcement actions are taken appropriately.
  • Conduct thorough investigations, preserving evidence and interviewing involved parties.
  • Summon necessary emergency services and document incidents accurately.
  • Perform follow-up investigations to gather additional information and develop leads.
  • Prepare detailed reports and records related to investigations and incidents.
  • Engage in community policing efforts, assisting citizens with various inquiries and concerns.
  • Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and city departments as needed.
  • Maintain proficiency with issued equipment and weapons.
Minimum Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:
  • Certification as a law enforcement officer with completion of advanced training in traffic management or accident reconstruction.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; preference for candidates with post-secondary education in criminal justice or related fields.
  • At least two years of law enforcement experience, completion of a State Basic Training Academy, and eligibility for New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification are required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Understanding of modern law enforcement practices and procedures.
  • Ability to learn applicable laws and departmental regulations.
  • Physical fitness and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Capability to establish positive working relationships with colleagues and the community.
  • Sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Familiarity with the geography of the city.
  • Proficient in operating necessary tools and equipment.
  • Must meet state and departmental requirements for the position.
Tools and Equipment Used:
  • Police vehicle, radio communication devices, radar equipment, firearms, and first aid supplies.
Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to secure a motorcycle endorsement within one year of employment.
Supervision:

Works under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant.
