Job Overview

As a crucial member of the law enforcement team, the Criminal Investigator engages in specialized investigative duties aimed at solving crimes and enforcing legal statutes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain regular attendance to fulfill the responsibilities of this role. Conduct thorough investigations into alleged offenses against individuals or property, both in the office and in the field with minimal oversight.
  • Gather and document statements, depositions, or confessions. Interrogate complainants, witnesses, and suspects; detain suspects and execute arrests.
  • Draft and execute search warrants. Examine crime scenes to locate and secure evidence for collection.
  • Facilitate witness or victim support and management, including necessary transportation.
  • Collaborate with various agencies and law enforcement entities to share information, including military, NCIC, FBI, DEA, ATF, and other criminal intelligence resources.
  • Respond to incidents at the correctional facility for investigation and processing of felony crimes, ensuring proper documentation and acquisition of necessary warrants.
  • Prepare, submit, and follow up on forensic laboratory requests. Review cases for trial preparation, focusing on evidentiary and legal aspects essential for successful prosecution. Draft comprehensive reports of investigative activities; consult with legal representatives and prepare case documentation for court proceedings; provide testimony as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of evidence in court as required.
  • Coordinate with the Medical Examiner on death investigations; attend autopsies as necessary. Conduct preliminary investigations at death scenes, documenting relevant findings.
  • Investigate allegations of misconduct or legal violations by public officials or law enforcement personnel.
  • Perform detailed analysis of criminal cases post-arrest, addressing potential legal defenses.
  • Support case reviews or plea negotiations as requested by prosecuting attorneys. Conduct fingerprinting, photography, and other laboratory analyses.
  • Engage in narcotics investigations, including field testing of suspected controlled substances.
  • Locate and interview individuals on defense witness lists as required. Provide training to department personnel in investigative techniques.
  • Maintain availability via pager, radio, or phone; assume command of assigned crime scenes.
  • Adhere to Federal, State, County, and City laws and regulations.
  • Maintain proficiency with issued weapons and equipment.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of 2 years of law enforcement experience, completion of a State Basic Training Academy, and ability to obtain New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification.

Desired Qualifications
Certified law enforcement officer with at least one year in an investigative role. Familiarity with computer forensics, ballistic analysis, crime scene reconstruction, fingerprint identification, and various crime types is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
Strong understanding of modern law enforcement practices, investigative techniques, and evidence handling. Ability to analyze complex situations and make sound decisions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Capacity to maintain effective relationships with colleagues and the public. Proficient in following instructions and operating necessary tools and equipment.

Physical demands include the ability to respond to emergencies, interact physically with individuals, and perform various physical tasks.
