Personal Support Specialists create opportunities for individuals to thrive as members of their communities. This role involves assisting individuals with daily living activities and facilitating social, recreational, and community engagement. Services are provided in accordance with state service definitions and standards for both Home and Community Based Programs (HCS) and Texas Home Living Program (TxHmL). We are looking for team members who are motivated, eager to learn, and committed to supporting all facets of the program, both in residential settings and during community activities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as a positive role model for individuals, offering hands-on assistance with daily living skills.
  • Supporting individuals with financial management through training in money handling, identification, and transactions.
  • Providing support to individuals exhibiting various behaviors; implementing Behavior Support Plans and documenting progress.
  • Assisting with meal preparation, including shopping, following recipes, and cooking.
  • Transporting individuals to community outings, employment opportunities, and scheduled events while adhering to transportation protocols.
  • Monitoring and assisting with individuals' self-administration of medications.
  • Ensuring safety by participating in fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the living environment through regular checklists.
  • Creating a hazard-free environment by addressing maintenance issues and reporting concerns to management.
  • Documenting services provided accurately within a 48-hour timeframe, utilizing both paper records and Electronic Health Records.
  • Using Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) devices for service documentation when required.
  • Learning to operate Adaptive Aid Equipment, including wheelchairs and Hoyer Lifts.
  • Collaborating effectively with team members and maintaining open communication.
  • Working independently to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Delivering exceptional customer service to individuals and their families.
  • Maintaining punctuality and consistent attendance, providing notice for any time off requested.
  • Demonstrating competency in all required procedures of the Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) program annually as mandated by regulations.
  • Representing Hill Country MHDD Centers professionally at various events and meetings as assigned.
  • Traveling as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities, which may include driving agency or personal vehicles.
  • Protecting client confidentiality by adhering to HIPAA regulations.
  • Completing required training in Relias and other assigned trainings, whether in-person or virtual.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
  • Job responsibilities may be updated to reflect changes in requirements.

Essential qualifications include:

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent with three letters of recommendation.
  • Completion and maintenance of CPR certification and PMAB training.
  • A valid Texas State Driver's License.
  • Current automobile insurance and the ability to travel to individuals as needed.
  • **To ensure safety for clients and staff, candidates must demonstrate the physical skills necessary for effective PMAB. This role can be both mentally and physically demanding. Training will cover PMAB principles, decision-making, communication, and physical intervention techniques when necessary. Candidates must be able to: lift and support at least 55 lbs, perform various physical maneuvers, and execute restraint procedures as required.**

Physical demands:

  • Ability to perform essential job functions safely and effectively.
  • Regular, punctual attendance is required. Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry over 20 pounds.
  • Clear verbal communication skills for effective interaction.
  • Capability to provide CPR upon certification.
  • Ability to complete PMAB training successfully.

  • Working independently to meet community and regulatory standards with high-quality outcomes.
  • Collaborating with others and being reliable in attendance, as your presence is crucial for those you support.

  • Dayhab (typically 8am-4pm) – focusing on social activities, transportation, and daytime engagements.
  • Residential (typically 4pm-12am; 12am-8am) – concentrating on home responsibilities and nighttime activities.
