Geotechnical Project Manager

Overview

The Geotechnical Project Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing various geotechnical initiatives for clients in private land development. These projects encompass the planning, design, and management phases for sectors including industrial, commercial, and residential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engages with clients to assess site needs and offers insights on the design of complex geotechnical investigations, pavement assessments, slope designs, retaining structures, foundations, and pavement solutions.
  • Sets project objectives and supports the attainment of quality assurance and quality control benchmarks.
  • Leads and manages daily operational tasks for the execution of Geotechnical and Construction Materials Testing (CMT) projects.
  • Collaborates with project architects, civil and structural engineers, and other technical personnel to ensure effective project development and delivery.
  • Oversees project budgets, evaluating profitability, revenue, margins, billing rates, and resource utilization.
  • Facilitates team meetings and conducts project evaluations.
  • Prepares billing information for clients on assigned projects and manages collections for outstanding accounts.
  • Identifies opportunities for additional project scope and revenue, engaging in business development efforts.
  • Drafts and/or reviews project proposals, change orders, and manages overall project scope.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with clients regarding project status.
  • Mentors team members and fosters strong client relationships.
  • Supervises drilling operations and laboratory testing for projects.
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Possession of a Michigan P.E. License or the ability to obtain one.

Knowledge and Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years in project management, with a preference for experience in healthcare, residential, commercial, or industrial land development projects.
  • At least 10 years of relevant geotechnical experience in site development, including foundation design, soil bearing capacity assessments, construction, and pavement design recommendations.
  • Familiarity with codes, regulations, and standards pertinent to geotechnical design and construction for major site development projects in Michigan.
  • Proficient in standard software applications used for geotechnical engineering design and management (e.g., Microsoft Office).

The majority of work is conducted in an office environment, with some outdoor responsibilities involving inspections of land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is essential for operating drafting instruments, computers, and various office equipment.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may also need to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and must be able to talk or hear. Occasionally, the employee may lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
