Director of Development

Georgetown University's Office of Advancement is seeking a skilled Director of Development to join our team. As a key member of our frontline fundraising team, you will play a critical role in building connectivity, engagement, and philanthropic support from the corporate and foundation community for the globally recognized McCourt School, housed in Washington, DC. This position, embedded within the Office of Advancement but partnered closely with the Dean of McCourt and key McCourt faculty/academic leaders, will be responsible for raising philanthropic support specifically for the school, but must also represent, at times, the broader institution. The Director of Development will serve as the primary advocate for the School within the corporate and foundation sectors by building, fostering, and maintaining strong relationships that are vital for securing substantial financial support. Acting as a liaison with the Office of Institutional Partnerships to ensure there is coordinated management of the relationships in the best interest of Georgetown and The McCourt School, additional duties include, but are not limited to:

Fundraising
  • Build and manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors to support the work of The McCourt School. Prospects will range in giving capacity and the majority of the portfolio should be focused on corporate and foundation relationships.
  • Develop and implement an effective strategy for attaining specific personal fundraising goals, while contributing to the overarching goals of McCourt in the Called to Be campaign and beyond. This includes meeting personal dollar, visit, ask/proposal submission goals annually. The Director of Development will be expected to create and sustain a portfolio capable of initially raising $500,000-$1,000,000 annually, and as it matures, in excess of $3M per year.
  • Create and effectively manage individual donor and corporate/foundation engagement plans in all stages of the donor lifecycle (cultivation to stewardship).
  • Manage relationships with key academic leaders and volunteers in pursuit of raising support.
  • Occasionally plan and manage small mini-campaigns as necessary and as established as a priority for McCourt, developing and executing thoughtful partnership strategies to advance philanthropic goals with internal partners, especially the University Regional Development team.


Corporations and Foundations Strategic Planning
  • Identify and cultivate corporations and foundations for the purposes of raising support for The McCourt School.
  • Work with McCourt leadership and OA Strategic Initiatives to connect potential institutional needs with areas of focus for corp/foundation entities.
  • Develop an engagement plan for various corporate and foundation partners, which may include the introduction of faculty members or leadership, inviting speakers to campus, or board service.


Board Operations
  • Manage one or more of The McCourt School's advisory boards, including agenda creation, theme generation, membership driving, dues tracking, and board communications.
  • Work with principals and faculty members as appropriate to create strategically focused meetings.
  • Work with Gift Administration (OGA) to set up pledges for board members, and track donations for annual board dues to ensure a healthy pipeline of income for the Dean's priorities.
  • Network with board members and others to recruit new members.


Work Interactions

This position reports to the Senior Director of Development, McCourt. The Director of Development, McCourt will partner with Office of Advancement (OA) colleagues, with a heavy emphasis on collaboration with other development officers, including the Office of Institutional Partnerships and regional-based Development teams, to help with idea generation, planning, and execution of creative cultivation and engagement initiatives associated with the campaign and major gifts enterprise. The Director of Development, McCourt will also interact with principals, faculty, and other University leaders in efforts aimed at reaching fundraising and engagement goals.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least six years of professional experience, preferably in a development/fundraising environment working with corporate and foundation donors
  • Development experience at an academic institution or policy-related organization is desirable
  • Working knowledge of the policy priorities and strategies of national philanthropic foundations and corporate offices
  • A desire to contribute to and participate in the mission of Georgetown University and the Office of Advancement
  • Highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative as appropriate
  • Ability to adapt communication style and work style to meet the needs of their constituents, taking initiative and action-oriented
  • Highly collaborative, with excellent attention to detail, and adept at managing multiple priorities
  • Possesses professional maturity and can apply tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality in dealing with members of the University community and the University's donors.
  • A demonstrated track record of working in teams to develop and consistently meet goals
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Suite and Google Suite
  • Experience with prospect management systems, donor databases, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems, especially Salesforce
  • A solid understanding of and experience with working with people from diverse cultures

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$66,783.00 - $126,720.23

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
