Role Overview

The Platform Engineering Manager will spearhead a team of platform and security engineers, guiding the development of Amadeus's cloud platform on Azure. This platform serves as the backbone for engineering and product teams, enabling the delivery of next-generation capabilities to our clients. This dynamic role demands effective communication, collaboration, and direct engagement in delivering the cloud platform while adhering to Amadeus standards for reliability, scalability, and security. Success in this role will be evaluated based on the empowerment of engineering teams through automation, governance, and federation, while fostering continuous improvement within the cloud infrastructure and platform.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a team of platform and security engineers.
  • Establish clear objectives and expectations, providing ongoing feedback and performance assessments.
  • Encourage a collaborative and inclusive team culture, promoting knowledge sharing and professional growth.
  • Collaborate closely with leaders of value delivery teams.

Platform Engineering

  • Guide the advancement of Amadeus's Azure cloud platform to support the growth and transformation of our solution portfolio.
  • Ensure reliability by establishing service level objectives (SLOs) and service level indicators (SLIs) for platform capabilities that align with overall service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Act as a point of escalation for platform-related challenges, offering expert guidance and support as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including developers, architects, and product owners, to align platform capabilities with business requirements.
  • Advocate for automation through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) templates for the automated provisioning of platform resources, utilizing tools such as Azure Resource Manager (ARM), Terraform, Ansible, or similar.
  • Optimize Azure costs while providing transparency to teams regarding platform expenses.
  • Facilitate self-service capabilities for platform functionalities to accelerate innovation.
  • Collaborate with the Amadeus cybersecurity team to identify security needs, conduct assessments, and ensure that vulnerability scans and penetration tests are performed as necessary.
  • Ensure the platform team adheres to industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO, GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Support security incident response protocols within the organization.
  • Bridge the knowledge gap necessary for installing, configuring, monitoring, and administering the Azure platform to Tier 1 & 2 support teams.

About the Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; a Master's degree is advantageous.
  • 4+ years of experience with cloud platforms and involvement in platform engineering teams.
  • 3+ years of leadership or management experience, preferably in a technical context.
  • 2+ years of experience with CI/CD tools and methodologies (e.g., Azure Pipelines, Jenkins).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficient understanding of container-based infrastructure on Azure (e.g., containerD/Docker, Kubernetes, AKS, OpenShift).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, ARM templates, or similar, along with knowledge of CI/CD practices.
  • Understanding of networking, security, and identity management within cloud environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of cloud security best practices and frameworks.
  • Experience with security assessment tools and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with compliance standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as C#/.NET and Java.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or JavaScript.
  • A genuine enthusiasm for learning, sharing, and collaborating.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Fundamentals, Azure DevOps Engineer).
  • Experience with other cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud).
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and practices.
  • Experience in the travel industry is a plus.
  • Experience with observability practices and tools, such as OpenTelemetry standards, Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus.
