Role Overview

The Platform Engineering Manager will oversee a team of platform and security engineers, guiding the enhancement of Amadeus's cloud platform on Azure. This platform is crucial for our engineering and product teams to deliver cutting-edge solutions to our clients. The position demands effective communication, teamwork, and direct management of the cloud platform, ensuring adherence to Amadeus standards for reliability, scalability, and security. Success in this role will be evaluated based on the empowerment of engineering teams through automation, governance, and continuous improvement within the cloud infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a team of platform and security engineers.
  • Establish clear objectives and expectations, providing ongoing feedback and performance assessments.
  • Encourage a collaborative and inclusive team culture, fostering knowledge sharing and professional growth.
  • Collaborate closely with leaders of value delivery teams.

Platform Engineering

  • Guide the advancement of Amadeus's Azure cloud platform to support the growth and transformation of our solution offerings.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of the cloud infrastructure by establishing Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Indicators (SLIs) that support overall Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Act as a point of escalation for platform-related challenges, providing expert advice and assistance as needed.
  • Work in tandem with cross-functional teams, including developers, architects, and product managers, to align platform capabilities with business requirements.
  • Advocate for automation through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices for the automated provisioning of platform resources, utilizing tools such as Azure Resource Manager (ARM), Terraform, and Ansible.
  • Manage Azure costs effectively while ensuring teams have visibility into platform expenses.
  • Facilitate self-service capabilities for platform functions to accelerate innovation.
  • Collaborate with the cybersecurity team to identify security needs, conduct assessments, and ensure that vulnerability scans and penetration tests are performed as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO, GDPR, HIPAA).
  • Support security incident response protocols within the organization.
  • Provide the necessary knowledge to install, configure, monitor, and manage the Azure platform for Tier 1 & 2 support teams.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline; Master's degree is a plus.
  • 4+ years of experience with cloud platforms, particularly in platform engineering roles.
  • 3+ years of leadership or management experience, ideally in a technical setting.
  • 2+ years of experience with CI/CD tools and methodologies (e.g., Azure Pipelines, Jenkins).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Proficient understanding of container-based infrastructure on Azure (e.g., containerD/Docker, Kubernetes, AKS, OpenShift).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform and ARM templates, along with knowledge of CI/CD practices.
  • Familiarity with networking, security, and identity management in cloud environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cloud security best practices and frameworks.
  • Experience with security assessment tools and methodologies.
  • Understanding of compliance standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C#/.NET and Java.
  • Experience with scripting languages like PowerShell, Python, or JavaScript.
  • A strong desire to learn, share knowledge, and collaborate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Fundamentals, Azure DevOps Engineer).
  • Experience with other cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud).
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and practices.
  • Experience in the travel industry is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of observability practices and tools, such as OpenTelemetry standards, Splunk, Grafana, and Prometheus.
