POSITION OVERVIEW

The Student Support Specialist is responsible for overseeing the behavior and safety of their designated student, ensuring adherence to the behavior modification framework, institutional guidelines, and organizational policies. This role involves assisting students in minimizing and avoiding inappropriate actions while accompanying them to various classes and activities to aid in their academic and behavioral objectives. The Specialist is tasked with maintaining accurate records of student activities and progress. They operate under the guidance of the classroom instructor to facilitate lesson execution and Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives. Additionally, the Specialist contributes to team efforts by participating in meetings, committees, and special projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Accompany the assigned student throughout the academic day, observing activities and documenting progress; ensure compliance with required electronic and paper records concerning the student's behavior and academic development.
  • Assist the assigned student in reducing and avoiding inappropriate behaviors through effective behavior management strategies.
  • Exhibit awareness of the student's diagnoses and academic performance; modify behavior as necessary to fulfill the requirements of the student's IEP.
  • Support the assigned student with both individual and group assignments; aid the teacher in executing lesson plans and actively promote the student's engagement and interaction; assist with necessary academic accommodations and modifications.
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge across all academic subjects and the capability to assist students with their coursework.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with all students.
  • Reinforce learning expectations and standards for classroom engagement and behavior; encourage student ownership and participation in the classroom; adapt strategies to facilitate student retention in the classroom.
  • Provide constructive feedback to the teacher, school leadership, and team members to assess student needs and adjust practices accordingly.
  • Contribute to a safe, inviting, and stimulating learning environment; assist in preparing classroom materials, distributing resources, and performing basic clerical tasks.
  • Facilitate student transitions between classrooms, during meal times, and at arrival and departure times.
  • Understand how students' disabilities affect their behavior and learning capabilities; apply knowledge of diagnoses to tailor intervention strategies that meet IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) requirements.
  • Effectively manage student behavior through the implementation of the behavior management framework, institutional policies, and procedures; model appropriate behavior throughout the school day.
  • Proactively identify behaviors that may lead to crises or disrupt the learning environment; employ effective behavior management techniques to mitigate disruptions.
  • Ensure continuous supervision of students to maintain a secure and safe educational environment.
  • Uphold student confidentiality in accordance with organizational confidentiality policies and student record management procedures.
  • Exhibit appropriate verbal de-escalation techniques to manage student behaviors; utilize the behavior continuum to apply the least restrictive interventions necessary; implement approved strategies during crises, including participation in seclusions, therapeutic holds, and escorts when required; consistently apply and model approved behavior management techniques.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, school leaders, and team members to assess student and classroom needs, adjusting interventions and practices to best support those needs; work with the team to develop intervention and incentive plans as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Relevant coursework, an Associate's or Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of six months of formal training or experience in special education, psychiatric settings, or similar environments for children and adolescents is preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English) are advantageous.
