Job Overview

Zap Energy is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Fusion Plasma Research Scientist to spearhead experimental initiatives, encompassing data evaluation, error analysis, publication, and dissemination of both experimental and computational findings.

This role involves collaboration with Zap Energy's scientific, engineering, and technical teams in the conceptualization, assembly, deployment, and management of the innovative Zap Energy SFS Z-pinch experiment. The successful candidate will also play a key role in mentoring other scientific personnel. We are looking for an organized and creative problem solver who can navigate technical challenges and implement effective, practical solutions through teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee experimental initiatives
  • Collaborate with Zap Energy's scientific, engineering, and technical teams to assist in the design, assembly, deployment, and management of research experiments
  • Conduct data evaluation, error analysis, publication, and presentation of experimental outcomes, including computational results
  • Support the design, deployment, and management of various plasma diagnostic systems (interferometry, spectroscopy, neutronics, and/or magnetics, etc.)
  • Mentor and guide Zap Energy Scientists

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Proven ability to lead projects and supervise scientific and technical teams
  • Experience in the design, procurement, assembly, deployment, management, and analysis of fusion plasma physics experiments
  • Capability to formulate and execute experimental run campaigns
  • In-depth knowledge of plasma diagnostics and instrumentation, including:
    • Laser interferometry (pulsed digital holographic interferometry; CW heterodyne quadrature interferometry, etc.)
    • Spectroscopy (ion Doppler temperature and velocity measurements; soft X-ray electron temperature measurements; SPRED; etc.)
    • Neutronics (scintillator/PMT systems in pulse counting & current mode and calibration; activation detectors, etc.)
    • Magnetics (probes; Rogowski coils; current transformers, etc.)
  • Expertise in data acquisition systems
  • Proficiency in data analysis, including reduction, interpretation, and error analysis
  • Aptitude to deploy and maintain one or more of the aforementioned diagnostics
  • Demonstrated record of publications
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Preferred:

  • 5-10+ years of post-PhD experience in fusion plasma physics research

The estimated salary range for this position is $120k - $170k. Actual salary will be determined based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.
