Job Summary:

The Georgia Department of Education is seeking a qualified teacher to serve as the Physical Education Teacher and Recreational Coordinator for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching deaf/hard of hearing students and possess a strong understanding of American Sign Language (ASL).

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and implement physical education programs for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, promoting age-appropriate physical activity and motor skill development.
  • Create and maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment, utilizing best practices in bilingual pedagogy and differentiated instruction.
  • Develop and implement recreational programs, including after-school activities and sports, to promote physical activity and socialization among students.
  • Coordinate and oversee the school's afterschool program, including tutoring and sports, to ensure a high-quality experience for students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff, utilizing ASL and other communication strategies as needed.
  • Document and maintain records of student progress, program evaluations, and staff training.
  • Recruit and train program staff, including tutors and coaches, to ensure a high-quality experience for students.
  • Collaborate with school staff and athletic directors to establish and enforce student codes of conduct and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Perform public relations duties, including communicating event calendars and announcements to stakeholders via the school's website.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Georgia Teacher Certification in Health and Physical Education.
  • Three years of experience teaching deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Experience managing an after-school program or similar program.
  • Knowledge of various school-level athletic/sporting games, rules, and regulations.
  • ASL proficiency at 3+ or above as measured by the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI).
