Assistant Store Manager Role

The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Store Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the Store Manager in overseeing customer service provided by store personnel.
  • Assist in addressing and resolving customer issues.
  • Ensure adherence to all ABC regulations regarding ID verification.
  • Implement effective merchandising strategies.
  • Manage store financial transactions.
  • Oversee inventory management.
  • Assist in training staff on product knowledge, customer service, and sales techniques.
  • Help establish procedures that align with store policies and relevant laws.
  • Supervise staff and promote employee development in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • Be available for work with little or no prior notice.
  • Work varied shifts, including weekends, holidays, and during adverse weather conditions. On delivery days, hours may extend beyond standard business hours (e.g., 5:30 am), and on inventory days, work may continue past midnight or during store closure hours.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Understanding of retail operation principles and practices.
  • Experience in supervising various levels of employees in a retail setting.
  • Proven track record of delivering excellent customer service, decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Experience in cash handling and inventory management.
  • Background in retail management, including shift leadership.
  • Proficient in using personal computers and electronic point of sale systems.
  • Familiarity with general software applications (Microsoft Word and Excel) and retail-specific software.
  • Experience in staffing and recruitment processes, including screening and interviewing.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Capability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations effectively.
  • Strong multitasking, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in engaging with both internal and external customers in person and via phone.
  • Effective communication skills with customers and employees of ABC, both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 65 lbs.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience in retail store management.
