Position Overview

The role involves overseeing the operation of various machinery, including horizontal drills, excavators, and dump trucks, while prioritizing safety at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely manage directional drilling equipment
  • Ensure overall site and crew safety, embodying Tilson's safety principles
  • Possess the capability to locate and operate equipment, trench, install ductwork, pull cables, and perform direct burial of main lines and drops. Verify all utilities prior to construction using diverse methods.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of telecommunications construction, including familiarity with Horizontal Directional Drills, and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, possessing knowledge of underground processes.
  • Oversee the construction schedule and timelines.
  • Operate a range of equipment, including various types of Directional Drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch), locators, trucks, excavators, and forklifts.
  • Act as the primary liaison with company crews and inspectors.
  • Adapt to various outdoor working conditions.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Strong leadership qualities and a solid work ethic
  • Effective communication skills and a positive demeanor
  • Ability to manage and direct a construction crew
  • Valid U.S. Driver's License with a clean driving record
  • Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work safely, both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in operating equipment, including directional drills, locating systems, trenchers, backhoes, and excavators
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience operating directional drills (Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch)
  • A minimum of 3 years leading an underground crew
  • 5 years of experience in Outside Plant (OSP) work
  • OSHA 10/30 certification
  • Experience in crew leadership
  • Class A CDL is advantageous
Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position operates in a field setting, requiring prolonged periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and lifting, often in challenging weather conditions.

The physical demands outlined here represent the essential functions of the job. This role is physically active, necessitating the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

While performing job duties, employees may be exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, ice, and wind. Regular exposure to loud noise levels and moving mechanical parts is also expected.

Must be at least 21 years of age to meet Tilson's driving eligibility requirements.
