Position Summary:

Staff Accountant

As an essential member of our Finance team, the Staff Accountant will assist the Accounting Manager in overseeing the financial activities of our waste management division. This role encompasses a variety of full-cycle accounting responsibilities, including profit and loss (P&L) analysis, lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and the management of prepaid expenses. The Staff Accountant will play a vital role in ensuring precise financial reporting, performance evaluation, and adherence to accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Analysis: Aid in the preparation and examination of monthly profit and loss statements. Analyze financial data to uncover trends, variances, and areas for enhancement, providing insights to facilitate informed financial decisions.
  • Lease Accounting: Assist the Accounting Manager in managing the accounting for both operating and finance leases, ensuring compliance with relevant standards. Help monitor lease-related transactions, including liabilities and right-of-use assets, and prepare lease amortization schedules.
  • Balance Sheet Reconciliations: Conduct regular reconciliations of balance sheets to maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial records, promptly addressing any discrepancies.
  • Prepaid Expenses Management: Oversee prepaid expenses by accurately recording, tracking, and amortizing costs, ensuring timely recognition in financial statements.
  • Accounting Support: Support the Accounting Manager with comprehensive accounting duties, including the preparation and review of journal entries, maintaining the general ledger, and facilitating month-end closing processes.
  • Financial Reporting: Contribute to the generation of periodic financial reports, ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal policies, and distributing reports as necessary.
  • Audit Preparation: Assist in preparing documentation for internal and external audits, supporting the Accounting Manager in addressing auditor inquiries and implementing suggested improvements.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and propose enhancements to accounting procedures, implementing best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with various departments to gather essential financial information and ensure proper accounting treatment of transactions, working closely with procurement and legal teams on lease documentation.

  • Proactively seek opportunities to learn and develop skills that align with evolving business needs.
  • Engage with management to align on new objectives and deliverables.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of accounting experience is required, with a strong preference for candidates with experience in the waste management sector.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in general ledger systems; familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365 is advantageous.
    • Knowledge of GAAP and regulatory requirements pertinent to the waste management industry.
    • Experience in lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and managing prepaid expenses.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Technical Proficiency: High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), with advanced Excel skills preferred.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational abilities, adept at managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team, effectively supporting the Accounting Manager and engaging with other departments.
