Position Summary:

Staff Accountant

As an integral member of our Finance team, the Staff Accountant will assist the Accounting Manager in overseeing the financial operations of our waste management division. This role encompasses full-cycle accounting responsibilities, including profit and loss (P&L) assessments, lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and the management of prepaid expenses. The Staff Accountant will play a vital role in ensuring precise financial reporting, performance evaluation, and adherence to accounting standards. This position offers a significant opportunity to contribute to the financial stewardship of a dynamic industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Analysis: Aid in the preparation and examination of monthly profit and loss statements. Analyze financial data to uncover trends, variances, and potential areas for enhancement. Provide insights and recommendations to bolster financial decision-making.
  • Lease Accounting: Collaborate with the Accounting Manager to manage accounting for both operating and finance leases. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards. Track lease-related transactions, including liabilities and right-of-use assets, and prepare lease amortization schedules.
  • Balance Sheet Reconciliations: Conduct regular reconciliations of balance sheets to maintain the accuracy and integrity of financial records. Promptly investigate and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepaid Expenses: Oversee prepaid expenses by documenting, monitoring, and amortizing these costs. Ensure timely and accurate recognition of expenses in financial statements.
  • Accounting Support: Assist the Accounting Manager with comprehensive accounting tasks, including the preparation and review of journal entries, maintaining the general ledger, and supporting month-end closing processes.
  • Financial Reporting: Contribute to the creation of periodic financial reports, ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal policies. Generate and distribute necessary financial reports.
  • Audit Preparation: Aid in the preparation of schedules and documentation for audits. Support the Accounting Manager in addressing auditor inquiries and implementing suggested improvements.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and propose enhancements to accounting procedures. Implement best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Engage with other departments to gather essential financial information and ensure proper accounting treatment of transactions. Collaborate with procurement and legal teams on lease documentation and financial matters.

  • Work closely with management to align on new objectives and deliverables.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: 2-4 years of accounting experience is required, with a strong preference for experience in the waste management sector.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in general ledger systems; familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365 is advantageous.
    • Knowledge of GAAP and regulatory requirements pertinent to the waste management industry.
    • Experience in lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, and management of prepaid expenses.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Technical Proficiency: High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), with advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP) preferred.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational and administrative capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team. Capable of supporting the Accounting Manager and effectively collaborating with other departments.
